Pronouncing the arabic letters sod, dod, taw, zaw, qaaf? |
Travel Info hi, i've learnt arabic myself but am finding the pronunciations quite difficult. I am not sure. Could anyone explain the tongue positions in detail? Are these pronounced properly in everyday speech like in words like mustafa : meem + saw + taw + fa - name fatima : faa + taw + meem - name tayyab : taw + ya + baa - good tabeeb : taw + baa - doctor qatar - qaaf + taw + raa - country daraba : dod + raa + baa - to beat especially when these letters occur adjacent? Do they just substitute the regular seen, daal, taa, zaa and kaaf? More importantly, if I as a foreigner substitute them, is there a possibility of the meaning changing to something else? When do the kids pickup the proper pronunciation? Please explain for MSA as well as for Egyptian. Thanks. Kjum. Travel Tips Amazing effort. You're awsome. I am impressed by your persistence to learn. That's amazing. I'll try to explain to you, but as they said, it is so hard and exhausting to do that by writing. On the other hand, it is pretty easy to show it to you by talking. If you live in Egypt, I can tutor you for free. Anyways, 1- Yes YOU CAN SUBSTITUTE THE PRONUNCIATION IF THEY ARE ADJACENT. That's what most of the native speakers do. Pronunciation is not a huge issue these days. They should be pronounced differently, but that's not a huge issue. You can pronounce them like their similar pairs. For example "sod" like "seen". It's ok. You can do that until you come to an Arabic speaking country and learn the proper pronunciation here. Most of the Egyptian people do not differentiate " in every day speech" in pronunciation between these two sounds. 2- NO. It is highly unlikely that the meaning will change to something else. Arabic is not like English where changing a sound would change the entire meaning. of the word. It "may" happen, but in very limited situations. All the best of luck to you. 3- All the things I mentioned are applied for the colloquial Arabic, of course when it comes to "MSA" - does this mean standard classical Arabic ? - all these things don't apply. In MSA you have to pronounce things carefully with elaboration. 4- Kids NEVER pick up proper pronunciation. They LEARN it at school but they NEVER practise it unless they are in situations where they have too. For example, if their parents teach them how to read Quran. It's mandatory to pronounce well. Have allllll the good luck. Edit : This is NOT a pitiful question. It's perfectly OK to ask. Nobody knows everything. As a matter of fact, it is great that you are trying to learn on your own. This is an amazing effort. I wish I were as diligent as you are. Answering your other question: No, It will seem "odd". You don't wanna sound odd. We pronounce this letter "the one in the beginning of "qalby", we pronounce it in MSA. Other wise, we pronounce it as a glottal vowel. Except for some weird and inexplicable words, we prononce it as it is. The word "qodwa" which means role-model, is not pronounced 'odwa. It is pronounced qodwa as it is. Others LOL! Wow! I think you need to attend courses for Arabic language; as it is extremely difficult explaining what you've asked in this forum! Sorry, wrong place! Good luck... uhh...the what.?? y' know, i think you better consult real, live, tangible people!! i know we're real here but...ugh...talk to a mouth.. that's all..hope ya dont take it hard or bad.. I can't answer your question, but I can offer my sympathies. I am trying to learn the language too and I am having great difficulty. I wish you luck.
