Well there aren't that many serious mysteries left. Hieroglyphs used to be a mystery--until they were deciphered by Champollion in the 19th cent. The pyramids used to be a mystery--until it was discovered how they were built (internal ramps most likely), by whom they were built (the workers who were buried nearby), and for whom they were built (the pharaohs of the 4th dnyasty). The 'curse' of Tutankhamun used to be a mystery--until you realize most of the information associated with it is false. Yes, Lord Carnarvon died from an infected wound and his canary was eaten by a snake, but Howard Carter didn't suffer any curse, nor did anyone else who has opened various other tombs. Some suggest the Sphinx is a mystery, how it is associated w/ the 10,500 BC nonsense due to water erosion (only one geologist claims this by the way, and has been proven to be erroneous) and the Giza plateau apparently matches Orion's Belt, but that's irrelevant anyway when claiming a much older date. Other suggest a link to Atlantis (a story by Plato anyway) but there's no evidence to suggest this beyond Edgar Cayce's prophecies. And of course the famed 'Exodus' by the Hebrews, which may in fact actually be the expulsion of the Semitic Hyksos who the Egyptians kicked out of Egypt at the start of the New Kingdom. There are mysteries associated with any ancient culture. We don't know everything yet, and we never will, but there are no real 'mysteries' in the sense they are often defined as being. |
