sharm el sheik is pretty much a tourist built destination and the wrong area to go to to see the 'real egypt' i have been there a couple of times was there last summer. The old town is somewhat inaptly named as i believe it was built in the 60's while narma bay is a very new complex. it is also the goverments flag ship town and they are justifiably proud of it but it is not really like the other towns in egypt. you can of course go diving to some of what i understand are the best places in the world and i found the snorkelling awesome.
i think if you take the trip to mount Sinai you will see the old monastery. i am sure you will enjoy your holiday, but to see the real egypt next year i would try to go to luxor or cairo.
But If you want to see the real Egypt you must go to one of the Nile towns Cairo, luxor, aswan or Alexandria on the Mediterranean. But even these cities are of course still tourist towns but they are very old.

Sharm elsheikh is so much fun, I Love it, one of the favorite places .
Ne'ma Bay is good, go to dahab more privacy, quite. you might need to rent a car will be more convenient.
be aware of scams. just be careful. when you are stranger you don't know what will come in your way.

but you will love it. Don't play with the sharks ;)
My friend Sharm is a tourism city. It's very nice and you can have almost all water sports. You can't see the normal Egypt in Sharm. You can see it in Cairo if you visit it.
I will tell you about activities you can do from Sharm. Dessert safari, diving safari, snorkeling. You should visit Ras Mohamed 35 KM from Sharm. It's a natural preservative and 1 of the best 3 places for divers.
A visit to St. Katherine also is very interesting. It's the highest place in Egypt and people go by night to hike and watch the sunrise on the top, then you go down and visit the monastery of St. Katherine.
You can also make a sea trip or a glass boat trip where you can see some corals from the boat.
1 day or 1 night visit to Cairo is available but you should book it when you arrive and select a good company. If you didn't visit Cairo before it can be very interesting that you visit the Pyramids, Museum, Citadel and Khan El Khalily in 1 day.
