Travel Info In Egyptian lore what does the scarab beetle with a skull on top of it and the eye of Horus represent? Travel Tips This maybe a modern design incorporating ancient Egyptian talimans of the scarab and the Eye of Horus also known as the Upchat. The eye of Horus is a protective talisman. It relates to the myth of Horus loosing his left eye in a battle with Set. His mother Isis restored the eye and his sight by her magical powers. The Upchat is also actually able to be used as a system of measurement,if made to the correct proportions and in this form is traditionally made of silver. The Scarab is a good luck amulet or talisman. It still holds some significance in many provincial areas of Egypt. It has no ritual value these days,it is seen only a a symbol of good luck. The intention is always inscribed in a message on the underneath. The Scarab did hold significance of endurance, regeneration etc to the ancient Egyptians. They would often be given or used for various wishes of luck and wishes for good fortune. They also featured in the mythology and can often be seen in tomb paintings holding the Kepher or rising sun between its front legs. The scarab beetle was thought to self generate. The skull, human or animal was never used by the ancient Egyptians as a talisman nor held any specific significance that would see it appropriately incorporated into any or their decoration of jewellry or other decorated objects. The skull did hold significance in some Roman rituals, but I know of no instances where the two beliefs were unified into a cult practise that could be the source of such an object.
