How safe is if for Americans to travel to Egypt?

Travel Info
I've always wanted to see the Pyramids and the ancient ruins along the Nile. But considering how Americans are viewed, especially in the Middle East, I really don't know how safe it would be to go there. Any other Amercians out there who have been to Egypt have any advice?

Travel Tips
Americans are not welcome to visit Egypt.. However, it is very safe for all nationalities to be there that is because Egyptians are kind people and they forget what others do for them.

I am at a bit of a loss as to your answer. This isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for traveling to Egypt. To me it sounds like you are saying that everyone BUT Americans are welcome to visit. From the tone of your response it sounds to as if you have a grudge against Americans. Is this true?

If you stick with a tour group you should be OK. Also check to see if there are any special alerts for Americans traveling in the region. I visited 10 years ago. While I had no problems, a few days after I visited the Egyptian Museum in Cairo a few tourists were killed when their bus was attacked. But for the most part they need tourist dollars, and as long as you are in a group and stick the tourist sites it shouldn't be a problem. If you are really worried tell everyone your Canadian.
Egyptians don't kill their tourists. You're welcome anytime.

May I add that Egypt is safer than your country, even for you.
Hi, first of all, your answer for your question will be: "Yes it's truley safe", not because I'm an Egyptian, but because its really sooooo safe here.
People here are so generous, kind and full of love to others.
Americans specially (or any other forigners) are treated better than Egyptians themselves!!! I swear that's the truth :)
I know its not the answer from an American that u wanted to hear, but it's the true answer.
Actually it's quite the fairy tale about how Americans are viewed in Middle Eastern countries. There may be some groups that aren't favorable of Americans, but the majority love Americans. I spent a month in Egypt and although I am Muslim, never did I feel my safety was at risk, nor did I ever feel like someone disliked me because of my nationality. My father-in-law said to me "Egyptians love Americans, we just don't love your government." I told him "that's okay, many Americans feel the exact same way you do."
The only thing you'll suffer from in Egypt being American is the price of things. Egyptians get a huge discount and being the wife of an Egyptian, I did too. Of course some places even asked for proof of marriage, lol! So we showed them our ID's and since I took his last name, it really helped us out. Anyways, once they know you are a tourist, the prices are jacked up tremendously. Of course 30 Egyptian pounds equal about $5, but it seems a steal when you can get it for 5 Egyptian pounds , lol! You'll also have tons of guides sticking to you hoping you'll use their services. Many even give you the tour first and then ask for money when you're done (sneaky). As far as your safety goes, don't insult Egypt and you'll do just fine. The Egyptians are very warm hearted people and they give as much and sometimes more than they can to make sure you are happy and comfortable.

Some places you HAVE to see if/when you go: take a Nile Cruise between Luxor and Aswan and try to catch Abu Simbel too if you can, the Pyramids and Muhammad Ali Castle in Cairo, oh and the National Museum in Cairo but be sure you see the temples and tombs first, there are many beautiful mosques and churches all throughout Egypt (just make sure you ask if you can tour before you enter, some have strict policies), and you can't leave Egypt without seeing Alexandria. There you can visit the Qait Bay fort, Montaza Palace, Alexandria Library (built on the site they believe the ancient library was), another museum, take a carriage ride along the seaside, oh and the ruins of a Roman theater. SO much fun stuff to do. You'll be so glad you went.

Good luck!
