Can anyone give me some tips on going to egypt, cairo for a free & easy tour. What are the must do & must see! |
Travel Info Any good hotels to recommend? Is December a good month to go? Are they any dress code due to religious relief? Please anyone can help!!! Travel Tips * I know what you mean by free & easy tour. -The must see is : Pyramids & Sphynx, Egyptian museum, Khan El Khalily area ... those are basics in Cairo. There are many other sites upon your request. - Good hotels are more than you expect and you didn't mention which category or any more details. I would say then Victoria or Cairo Khan. - December is a good month to visit Cairo, but if you mean the second half of December you should book it now. - No dress code. Only when you visit Muslim or Christian sites you should cover all except face and hands. Inside mosques, you'll have to take off the shoes and they may give you something to wear in your feet over the shoes in some mosques prepared for tourists visits. You'll have to pay a little money money to use that cover if it's there. In any other places it's free but advised to dress modestly specially in great monuments sites. It gives some people like me a feeling that the visitors respect the culture and history. On beaches you can wear what you like. Although topless is not allowed, but no one will prevent you in most cases. This is Egypt who welcomes her friends and visitors. If you need to know anything more send me. Good luck and welcome Others I'm sure you know the usual, don't show the bottom of your feet, don't use your left hand. As a female, you should not give men firm hand shakes AND look them into their eyes. That is a form of seduction. As for what to do, I have no idea. Smoke hookah? I hope this helps you out a little... As long as one pays, it is simple to find an easy going tour. By "free" I'm unsure if you intended it to mean easy going/cost free. There are many poor people there, so I suggest travelers to keep in mind that others need the $ more than the traveler needs to save it. $300/mo can house and feed an entire family of about 5 ppl. in some areas... Anyway, I was there this January (wandered cairo, hurghada and alexandria). It was cold to the point I wore a winter lined leather coat. As for hotels most major hotel chains are there and acceptable. If you have $120 to spend per night for the hotel you'll be fine. Dress code isn't expected as much from tourists and cairo seemed somewhat more liberal than alexandria. I was amused to see billboards for a show like CSI New York in various cairo areas and the models on the billboards dress and pose provocatively like the westerners...yet, it seems hypocrisy rings true all over the world and in egypt, too. more respect automatically is given to those who cover their heads b.c. it's assumed you're a good person and religious even before someone gets to know you. But you're a tourist and your $ is wanted, so people will at least put on a kind facade. However, once the ice has been broken along w/ some barriers, the egyptians I've met are some of the nicest (albeit overly emotional...it's as if one needs to put a compliment before a negative remark to lessen the "offense" of something that's a blatant fact) ppl. i've met. I also loved all of the strong square jaws I saw on many ppl + their lovely expressive eyes. Never saw so many square jawed men in such a radius in the states. Guess testosterone levels are high there to create that type of attribute. So staring at people is a fun activity, I guess. =) Also, I'm big on food when I travel. If you like fish my favorite is the smoked + stuffed tilapia along w/ mashi (?)/stuffed grape leaves. I'm not big on pasta, but I was exposed to a lot of pasta type foods near alexandria. The mediterranean area there was nice to see. If you can overlook the pollution + littering in most areas (hurghada seemed the better of the 3 places in terms of environmental friendliness--it's also way less crowded), you'll probably enjoy your trip. There are many good hotels but it really depends on how much you wish to pay. December is a lovely month and usually the weather is pleasant. No dress code, however, dressing in a conservative manner is advised- by that I mean no low cut dresses etc. There are many tour companies that will arrange a tour for you, however, you can do it cheaper on your own if you know where to go. |
