Travel Tips The British occupied Egypt in 1882, the britains wanted to conquer Sudan because they were fearing the French colonial expansion in the African continent by blocking their reach to India by threatening the Red Sea route. They conquered Sudan with the aid of the Egyptians in 1898 battle of Om Durman, in which they defeated the Mahdy's revolution. Sudan gained independence in 1956, after Egypt's Free Officers movement seized power in 1952. Egypt was adminstratively occupying Sudan since 1884 after reconquering of Sudan, so Egyptians offered Sudanese to choose between merging with Egypt or complete Independence. The Sudanese chose independence in 1956. Others Egypt and Great Britain used to occupy Sudan never been same nation I'll try to find you some references ah here it is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/anglo-egypt... History of Sudan as a modern political entity should be viewd within the same context as the rest of Africa. In prehistory the concept of political boundaries as we see them today was nonexistent and what we know today as Sudan was mostly inhabitted by nomadic tribes and various small independent kingdoms. Relations with the stronger neighbour to the North i.e. Egypt always shaped what was to become of Sudan. During the Roman rule of Egypt 31 BC- 642 AD the interaction between Egypt and the South were limited to a few military campains to discipline outlawed tribes. With the Arab conquest of Egypt in 642 AD, the Arab armies ventured South and annexed the Northern parts of Modern day Sudan to their growing empire in North Africa. Under the Othoman Empire much later the relation between Egypt and the South was further cemented by the numerous expeditions Mohamed Ali Pasha who came to power in 1805 the ruler of the then semi autonomous Egyptian province lead campains South to discover and secure the sources of the river Nile. But Sudan didn't aquire its known borders until the European colonial Era which shaped most of the boundaries in Africa under various power and resources sharing agreements between the colonial powers themselves without the conscent of the local people. Modern Sudan thus emerged as an extension of Egypt which was a british protectorate. And the King of Egypt was named King of Egypt and Sudan. The British gave Sudan a limited form of Self rule. Egypt gained formal independence from Britain in 1922... but since Egyptian independence was largely percieved incomplete Sudan remained part of Egypt. In 1952 The Egyptian revolution took place... Monarchy was abolished in 1953 with the declaration of the republic. In 1956 Egypt gave Sudan the choice for independence or full integration and the Sudanese people voted for independence in a popular referendum. As was the rule with all other African countries adopted by the then AOU the newly independent state was to retain the borders imposed by European colonialism. A situation which has contributed in the instability of the African continent since such separations had no regard to actual demographic facts and sensitivities. Mohamed Ali wanted to conquer Sudan for many reasons: - to put his hands on the springs of the Nile - to use the Sudanese as solders in his army - to take over its treasures -to make his own empire away of the British authority and he nearly succeeded in making it he conquered Sudan, what is Saudi Arabia now, the Turkish superpowers and threatened it by conquering its capital Istanbul and also he was going to take Greece when things turned over him, this made him to sign a treaty with the Britishs that says that his own country is defined as Egypt and Sudan well that is what i could remember right now |
