What are the rules for an American Citizen wanting to marry in Egypt? |
Travel Info Is it better to just do the fiance visa or is the spouse visa better? How much time are we looking at here? Can we marry religiously but not legally? Thanks. Travel Tips There are different types of marriages in Egypt to catter for different religious communities. Basicaly they can be divided in two main categories. What most call Moslem Marriage (which is in fact some kind of civil marriage with no religious ceremonies) and it follows Moslem law for financial and social matters. the other type is known as Christian marraige (or unified sects Motahedy el mellal) and it is left to each church, i.e. copt, catholic etc to determine their own rules such as for permission of divorce and other issues. Both marriages are fully recognized and valid, the difference shows up only if there are problems and you need to go to court as to which set of rules is applied. As for a religious marriage, if you are both christian, you can get the religious ceremony with no legal implications... but at the end it will be just considered a party and you'll not be considered as a married couple which might have some cultural and legal negative implications in Egypt. I wouldn't recommend that. My advice would be to get married where you intend to settle and live... so if you intend to go back to the states don't get married according to the Egyptian law and vice versa since this might cause technical problems in the future. As for Visas there's no such thing as Fiance or Spouse visa... as an American citizen you can get a visa from the nearest Egyptian Consulate in the US or get one upon arrival from the Airport... the Visa is valid for three months and a duration of stay of one month... it can be extended for a further six month stay (3 months at a time). Visas can take a couple of days to be issued from abroad or imediately from the airport... a fee of around $15 is involved. Once you get married... and decide to live in Egypt... you can apply for a temporary residence that will allow you to stay in Egypt for 5 years, renewable, as long as you are still married to an Egyptian Citizen. Others I think if you're an American you better stick to your own countryman and leave the Arabs alone. Tons of information can be obtained here: USCIS.gov This web site will answer all your questions or it will link you to sites that will. It was not hard for my American daughter to marry an Egyptian man. We flew to Egypt...they were married in Cairo (both Christians) and we applied for his visa before we left the country. Total time took 5 months, from start to finish and him arriving in USA. Your marriage will still be legal regardless of religion. I think spouse visa is faster. (personal opinion) Good Luck! The only legal marriage in Egypt is a civil ceremony performed at the local marriage court, which is in accordance with Islamic practice. Persons wishing a religious ceremony may arrange for one separately, but it is the civil ceremony that establishes the legal marriage. It is possible for foreigners to marry in Egypt. The following documents are required. 1. Proof of identity (a passport) 2. Proof of termination of previous marriages is required. The original or a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate must be submitted when applicant executes the approval of marriage. 3. Sworn statements of the parties involved that they are free to marry, and that they are of the Moslem, Christian, or Jewish faith. Interfaith marriages are permitted except in the case of a Moslem woman and a non-Muslem man. 4. A no-objection statement from the parties' Embassies. NOTE: this is a formality required by the Egyptian government. It does not guarantee that the U. S. Embassy will issue an immigrant visa to an alien spouse. Items 3 and 4 are included in one document. The blank from is available from the Consular Section of the U. S. Embassy in Cairo. This document must be notarized by a U. S. consul. It must then be certified at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs along with the proof of termination of any pervious marriages. 5. Forms and questionnarires to be compleated at the marriage court. These can only be obtained on the spot on the wedding day or the day before. Applicants should have original versions and photocopies of all documents, as well as notarized Arabic translations for all documents not in the Arabic language. (Translations should be done and certifiesd by the Egyptian Embassy or consulates in the U. S. or the Egyptian Ministry of Justice in Cairo.) Any two male witnesses with identification documents must be present to sign the marriage documents. A routine physical performed by an Egyptian doctor is sometimes required. The marriage certificate is recognized as a legal document in the United States and many other countries. Hope this helps and good luck! you will regret the marriage of that Egyptian remember this well cause you will get stunned of how it will fit your future any rules you want to know ? Hi, the other long answer is pretty accurate. A couple of things though, you will need passport photos for the civil ceremony....if the man youre intending to marry is muslim, you will have the 'contract' (nikah) in it is the dowry, (maher) this can be any amount of money, services, etc etc. U can google the term and get alot more details....As for visas alot depends on where u live. California where I am at is taking forever for my Egyptian wife. 4 months and we dont even have a receipt # yet. USCIS has alot of answers, but not alot of truth in what i have seen. The marriage visa is Supposed to be faster, but in reality ive seen its much slower as there is more paper work. But the spouse is supposed to take a higher priority.....You can also marry relgiously and not civally although technically you are legally married here. IF you marry civillay, make sure u get the papers translate BEFORE you leave there. Now keep in mind it takes some time to register the marriage after its done and get the translation. But its much better to bring these papers back and save on fed-ex fees etc. Hope it works out....by the way a certified divorcee decree wont do it, it Must be re-certified by the secretary of state in whatever state u live....then translated there.... my mom went to egypt and married her husband there and he is here now with her.she did the spoce visa and that allow then to work too while here. it took her from start to finish 6 months.and if are divorse from another man who you need to go to the embassy and get a paper getting permission to marry . my mom was there a year total because she visited many place and my sister got sick and seek medical help there.and you may be able to marry religiouly but i think thats not make it legal.i suggest to do everything legally . i wish you all the best in your marriage to an egyptian my mom husband treats her wonderfull dont mean all is the same.but i talk to many from egypt and there all pretty wonderfull people .. |
