Definitively not safe. Mexico is treacherous to drive through. Cops are malicious, expect to spend at least $300 to $500 on bribes just on the way down there. Violent robberies are also common around the borders with Guatemala. Guatemala is a hell hole plagued with violence. Once in El Salvador you are safe.
