Is drunken driving in El Salvador actually punishable by death? |
Travel Info Every indication I find of this online comes from the same quoted text. I thought that perhaps this is misconstrued. Travel Tips No it is not. However, the law was changed two years ago and is now one of the toughest in the hemisphere against drunk drivers. Drunk drivers that get caught can be charged with "Fearless Driving" and you can even end up in jail right next to the gangmembers and robbers for a few days or even weeks. Unfortunately (or fortunately for some) the long respected Salvadoran Civil Police is slowly becoming corrupt like the other Latin American police forces. They may accept bribes to release you even if you are totally drunk and driving. Source(s): I lived there. Other Travel Tips no my friend is not punishable by death, in fact there is no death penalty in el salvador. if the police ask you to pull over and find out your drunk two things can happen, if you were driving alone they take your car and license away and give you a ticket, but if you were driving with passengers they charge you with negligent driving behavior, and they take your car away, give you a ticket and put you in jail for 5 days (this time can depend or vary). I live in el salvador we are not that cruel JK....Maybe it was "back in the days" i mean loong time ago. Gotta ask my dad about it. Now there is new law in effect called "Conductor temerario" which means if somebody is found driving under the influence, they go to jail for 72 hours....if so happens at the beginning of a holiday..then you are screwed, you will be released after that holiday. It happened to some friends of my..... you might get a ticket, el salvador doesnt have death penalties yet... |
