Also ordinary people are very helpful even when neither of you have a common language It very easy to do by train - the journey is between 1hr4 and 1hr20 and trains run about every 15 minutes. Check out www.trenitalia.com for the schedule and prices (price depends on whether you take a fast or slow train). If you are coming from the airport in Pisa to florence, you can either take the train (see link above). Be aware that there are some trains that leave from the airport and go directly to Florence and others that go to the central station in Pisa where you have to switch to a train going to Florence.
