Do elderly women have to wear a Hijab (head scarf) in Iran? |
Travel Info OK. I know that Iran has hijab rule that is based on correct Islamic dress. But in Islam an elderly woman who is past the age of marrying doesn't have to. I have been to Iran a few times and never saw any woman in a public place without some kind of hijab however perfunctory. However I have seen a few documentaries (filmed in Iran) where elderly and disabled women weren't wearing hijab So what is the exact law in Iran. Please only answer this if you are Iranian (or live in Iran) and know the law.. Thanks. Either way, let me write my experience in the following lines: It is seemingly absurd or contradictory though true that in Iran, and for that matter in most of the Muslim countries, the elderly women would have to cover themselves head to toe with black 'Chador' - single piece silky or polyester fabric worn over body & head and held by one hand near to the throat, a seemingly inconvenient act when carrying some load or children. Paradoxically the eye-catching beauties of all ages in Iran in those days would wear western style dresses, sometimes covered by Chador when they were out of the house, most of the times they would sport their attire like any of their western counterpart. After the revolution, however, there were almost 100% impositions of Islamic edicts (order proclaimed by authority) in almost all the sphere of life. The women were persecuted who would not abide by the tenet of Islam as per the newly set Rules in Iran by the clerics, mostly based in the city of Mashad. Now, to answer your question 'So what is the exact law in Iran?' it is apparently no different than those existing in many Arab countries. However, the Arabs would treat their girls and ladies more harshly than the Iranians in the name of maintaining Sharia law etc. If you happen to be in Saudi Arabia and such 'stricter' countries where the Quraan and Hadiths are followed by the book, you would find the Iranian girls and women are living with more dignity, if not as good as the western counterpart are having, even if the women in Iran may not accept such harsher rules, imposed by the clerics, to guide their life! Btw, my mom and elder women in Bangladesh do cover their hairs with Saaris, but my wife and daughters seldom feel covering their hairs, though they would wear modest attire as per our Bengali tradition. Others Yeah they have to. goernment are radicals It is polite to wear them according to the religion...the police are very strict there, so I reccommend wearing one yeah, you still have to wear hijab, if your old, or mature, or young:) i'm Muslim hello, i am not from iran. sorry i know you wanted only people from iran to answer, i just had to say to the people who repsonded, an old woman can take off her head scarf. it is better to keep it on, however if she is before(a child) or past marriage age she may remove it.
