ATMs in West Africa? |
Travel Info I'm traveling to Cameroon and was wondering if I will be able to withdraw money there from a debit card. I will be in Yaounde and also north in Maroua, and was wondering about ATM options for both of these cities. Thank you! Travel Tips You better bring cash with you there is a very slim chance you will even find a place to eat that will take a debit or credit card I have worked in Angola, Equatorial Guinea and never even saw a atm Others I don't know about Cameroon, but my husband is in Benin a lot and he uses ATMs. However, they only take visa, not master card. I don't know if they take debit cards or only credit cards. Our debit card is a master card, so my husband has to use our credit cards to get cash from an ATM. there are ATMs in Africa but the cards accepted are the local ones and no international card. Even if it is possible to use your mastercard, don't use it. Talented scammers in Africa are always ahead in the game. I have been to Africa many times, hi Phyl, and my wife is Africa-born. I think the francophone countries normally have ATMs. The Cameroon falls under such. Example: When I was in Ghana, no ATMs did I see or experience(which doesn't mean they didn't have them then or now). While doing a day in Lome, Togo, I used an ATM just inside a bank. I enjoyed because in Togo, they give you access to more of your money in one transaction usually than in Ghana. As someone said earlier, it is usually the Visa debitcard the African countries take. Not Mastercard, American Express(except for traveler's checks) or discovery cards. In Ghana, a US bank's Visa logo debitcard can get you as much as $500 a day out of your US bank account. BUT it takes time to registar in the US account. So you must budget yourself and keep good records of your banking. Thanks to online banking it easier now. Just let your home country's people and banks you do business with know when you will be out of the country and for how long and where you will be. If you are an American, I would suggest you signup for www.creditsecure.com so you can monitor online all your credit reporting agencies while abroad. Plus you can place a lock on your accounts as well so no one can investigate them to extended new credit. Finally, go to www.afrointroductions.com to meet people in the places you are going and get firsthand info on the countries, areas you will be in. ALWAYS lookout for conartists and 419 scammers in other countries and online in those countries. Travel is a beautiful thing but you must be cautious 24/7. Best wishes I would not totally listen to the other poster. I don't agree with signing up for a service. However, you should notify your bank that you will be using your card outside of your home country and take your banks phone number with you. Use an atm inside a bank. Look for one that take the Visa debit or the Plus symbol. Visa debit you would choose credit. Plus symbol you would choose checking account. If possible make sure you use an atm that won't eat your card. If you can find an American or UK bank (depending on your county you ar from). Your visa debit can be run through as a cash advance at banks. You will need you id and passport for this. There may be extra fees both way for this service. These methods will still come out of your current/checking account. |
