Travel Info What do new expat teachers would like to know in a new country? Travel Tips I am an ex-pat teacher and I will tell you generally what I look for before I decide to move to a new country. First I check the cost of living. I try and compare items where I live now to similar things in my new country. Also, I check the climate, security, transportation options, housing and the current ex-pat community. I also like to know about possible restrictions that maybe imposed on me and my lifestyle. The cost to visit neighboring countries in the region and the tourist sites available. I like to know the character traits of the local inhabitants. The stability of the current government and levels of corruption I might encounter. I like to know what kind of families my students come from and how they relate to the foreign teachers. I try and find online newspapers in English from my new country and begin reading local and national articles. Basically, we want to get a good feeling of the country, nobody likes surprises in this business, especially if you are committed to a two year contract! Hope that helps.
