What is the dress code for women in Kuwait. And do they have the same rights as men? |
Travel Info What is the dress code for women in Kuwait. And do they have the same rights as men? Travel Tips Even as an American I find it mind boggling that my fellow Americans think that it is all right to judge other countries customs and cultures based on our customs and cultures. We have the right (dispite what Bush wants) to rule over ourselves and to be free in our own country. We don't have the right to impose our culture or customs on any other country. You can read the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights...nowhere does it say we have the right to mess with any other countries. The mass media propaganda shouts that we are the Paragon of Truth and Justice and Freedom...but we are not. Our freedoms have been stolen by criminals in our government. We have more crime per square mile than almost any other country. Most of that crime is violent. We are the 'wealthiest of nations, but less than 1% of our population owns 70% of it. That same less than 1% pay only 30% of the taxes and the poorest 99% pay 70%. WAKE UP ! We Need To Clean Our House Over Here Before Even Thinking About Being Critical Of Other Countries. Others Their preaty much covered, but as you are a westener, you will have more lee-way. They probably don't have the same rights as men, but hay their not amarican, they do have their own culture which is normal for them. I have been to Dubai & Abu Dabi a couple of times. Women dress conservatively and many are covered or in an abaya (the black gown) -- but there is not an official dress code (or a morality police checking on outfits). You will see younger women wearing western clothing on the street or in the malls. Underneath the abayas, they are usually wearing some very expensive designer clothing and the latest trends. All the major designers have shops in Kuwait City in Salmiya. Women drive, but it's more common to see men behind the wheel. When I was there, women were still not voting but I think there is now a law that women can run for and vote in elections. (edit: I found a BBC news story describing elections in 2006 where women are voting and running for office: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4... ) I worked in Kuwait in 2003; I'm female. Women in Kuwait are not obliged by law to follow any dress code, however, most women do cover up. As a tourist/foreigner, you're best off wearing long pants or a long skirt and mid-length or long sleeves. You don't need to cover your hair. Women have many of the same rights, but they can't vote. heeeeeeeeeeeeey this is nonsence! im a kuwaiti living in kuwait! everyone wears what they want! some people cover up and alot dont! especially teenagers. ok maybe they dont shof their tummys and all that but these days i am seeing girls wearing shorts (a little bit above the knee) with sleevless/ tank tops! most older women do wear the black abaya... Women do have the right to vote since LAST YEAR!! |
