Does anyone know a victim of an honor killing/ attempted honor killing? How common are they?

Travel Info
I honestly don't mean to offend anyone, I know most families love there daughters no matter where they live. There was a story in the news today about a British/銆€Iraqi man convicted of murdering his daughter over her falling in love with a man outside of their tribe. Honor Killings have been recieving a lot of Western media attention lately. Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences?

Travel Tips
I know that they are still common in some regions. Forexample in kurdish regions in Irak, Syria etc. I'm turkish and in Turkey, the honor killings are common in the south-east region where Kurdish tribes live. Although they are being punished by the turkish court, they continue committing it. A family court decides whether the girl should be killed or not, and the killing duty is given usually to the young male member of the family or tribe. Sometimes to get a reduction in the punishment, they choose the teenagers to commit it. And sometimes they force the girl to suicide herself, they close the girl to a room and give her a rope to hang herself. Hopefully there are fathers or brothers who refuse to do it, but the families usually live in tribes and if you refuse to do it, the honor of your family is questioned or you are not accepted anymore in the tribe. Usually the fathers or brothers or uncles who commit it, show no sign of regret and furthermore they are very proud of themselves, because the family honor is much more important than the daugters. The reasons for killing the daugther are:
- The girl marries with a man the family does not approve
- The girl is not virgin before marriage
- The woman leaves her husband
- The girl flirts with men
- The girl/woman gets pregnant outside of marriage
- The woman cheats her husband

To stop this crimes, we have to educate this people and make them civilized because they just belive in their laws.
