Travel Info What type of travel adapter will I need for Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia (travelling from UK)? Travel Tips I lived in Kenya for a few years (will be moving back in a year) and have done a substantial amount of travelling in Tanzania as well. Coming from the UK, I do not see much problems with your electronics in these countries. I came from Canada and even I did not have much dificulty. Most electronics that you might be travelling with usually operate on a rechargable battery that recharges by pluggin in the unit. The fact that the charge is put into a battery before it reaches the device even protects the device from any electrical surges that can be typical in their electric systems. Usually their is a converter in the middle of the chord with most electronics, or in the rechargable device or the plug head and this will tell you its acceptable range of currents. For most items that people travel with you can actually plug it directly into most country's current without ill effect. To find this, look fo where it says input and it will usually say 100 - 240V 0.8A 47-63hz or something like this. These numbers mean that you can plug this device in directly anywhere in the world via a simple converter that only converts the plug design, not the current. These can be attained locally in most department stores. Just go into any Nakumat in nairobi into their hardware department and you can get this device for 75 shillings (about 50p) so they are really cheap and easy to find. Enjoy your trip! Others Kenya & Malawi use the same plugs as the UK. In Tanzania and Zambia, they generally use UK style plugs but you might also find the ones with 2 or 3 small pins that they use in Greece. If you want to buy an adapter before you go, you can get one from http://www.deltacom.co.uk but it's cheaper to buy one locally if you find you need it. The voltage in the countries mentioned is 240 volts a/c.at 50Hz. I worked as an electrical supervisor for a number of years in the region and all the installations were closely linked to what we have here in the U.K. All socket outlets on the installations I completed were 13 amp three pin, which is standard practice. Good Luck, Malcolm. Kenya definitely uses the same plugs and same voltage - well 20 volts less but it doens't make any difference - as the UK. buy it local once you travelled there, they're cheaper and you can find more accurate ones as well. In that i mean you can try it on your electronics in the market knowing that it will work when you reach where you're going to live. Hope that helps, have a safe journey. me Malawi definitely uses the same plugs as UK. But u could buy an adapter at the airport on your way out. Last time I was at the airport (January) I heard a family complaining that they had bought an adapter set from WH Smiths, then went into Dixons and discovered it was a couple of quid cheaper!!!!! have a fantastic time!!! |
