Cell phone and internet use southern africa?

What is the best way to use cellular and internet service in southern africa. I just purchased and "unlocked" GSM phone so do I get a SIM card here (US) or there. Would I need to rely on an internet cafe to use my laptop or is there a mobile device I can purchase to connect in Africa

in south africa mobile internet is very simple to obtain. same goes for cell phones.

If you are going to South Africa in particular, you should not have a problem there with either internet or cellular services.
