A thuraya is okay; it can be frustrating to receive a call indoors and then having to run outside to get the signal...best to get with a docking station if you plan to be indoors. It's good because it can also serve as a GSM where that country allows. And it has a GPS in the phone that can be useful.

I think it works best in the Mideast/South Asia region (it doesn't have satelites all over the world so some regions it doesn't work). It doesn't work if you're in a boat over water as their satelites are all pointed/over land. I learned this bit in my emergency telecoms class -- I am work in international relief and development.
