Thailand or Malaysia for cheap shopping?

Travel Info
Hi, I have been to both countries so I know Thailand is good for shopping however, I went to Malaysia for a relaxing holiday and I was away from cities etc so I have no idea what Malaysia is like for shopping. I now want to go away again and don't know which one to go back to!

Travel Tips
Both Thailand and Malaysia have quite a number of interesting places for shopping. To be honest with you there are certain things which are cheaper in Malaysia or Thailand. It all depends on what you'd like to find. Most branded goods are best bought in Thailand where they are also one of the major producers in high quality products in the region. Malaysia is known for their electronic goods and parts whereas Thais have been famous for their fine arts and crafts. This is something you use as a weighing in its pros and cons.

Suburban life in Thailand is more convenient with the abundance of public transportation compared to Malaysia (if you are refering to getting away from the hassle and busy life of the metropolis)... whereas, it can be quite dangerous if compared to Malaysia (and inconvenient too).

Many of the Malaysian gifts/souvenirs/handicrafts are from Thailand. MOST of the produces in handicraft are brought in by Thai traders from bordering towns of Sg. Golok and Hatyai. Others include Vietnam and Indonesia. So, you might find them cheaper over there. If you still insist on visiting Malaysia to do the shopping on these kind of products, you may find some good stuff from the Malaysian Borneo side, not in Kuala Lumpur. Over there, you'll find indegeneous artworks and goods locally made/hand crafted.

Hint (Malaysia):
As mentioned above, you'll find the BEST place for shopping handicrafts/souvenirs in the Malaysian Borneo island.

There are certain places in Kuala Lumpur which offers good quality products of branded goods and such in areas like Bukit Bintang, Suria KLCC and Mid Valley Megamall. If you are looking for 'cheap' imitation goods, there are sold at abundance in Petaling Street and Sg. Wang. Fabric/clothing products sold in both countries are fairly of good quality.

You might also want to go to Penang island if you are talking about serious shopping. Many goods are sold at cheaper price compared to Kuala Lumpur and you might want to go for food shopping too (dried goods, fruits, etc.) as Penang is known as the 'food hub' of the Peninsular. Langkawi on the other hand, has a lot more to offer than Penang. Duty free products are sold at abundance... also a great place to get away from the busy world...

Hint (Thailand):
Go to Bangkok, you'll have a melting pot of cultural arts and crafts plus a mix of good quality branded goods (be wary of imitation, which looks as good as real). Most are locally made.

If you want REAL cheap products and getting away from the busy, city life, get a bus to the Thai-Cambodian border town of Aranyaprathet. You'll find one of the largest wholesale/bulk good market in the region. Most of the stuff are from Cambodia and Vietnam (I must warn you that this place can be quite hot and dirty).

Chiang Mai has a lot of high quality products (artwork, etc.) and natural gems brought in from the Burmese side. In the Northeastern provinces (Isaan), you'll find a lot of Lao products. Different provinces have different things to offer in Thailand, so if you'd ask me, it is the REAL place for shopping. This is quite an open subject though... it truly depends on what you are looking for in the end. I've known many Malaysians who go to Thailand to shop for the same reason...

Hope this helps and good luck! Source(s): Frequent traveler...
Other Travel Tips
I think Thailand might be a better choice. went to both places many many times, but nothing much to do and buy in Malaysia except for their local tidbits. i almost always come back empty handed from my Malaysia trips. Thailand offers much more variety in terms of shopping and food and their people are so friendly. will be going back to thailand again next week :-)
We have been to Kuala Lumpur about 3 times purely for shopping. I guess it depends what you are after. We go for computer parts / programs, cameras, Ipods etc and DVD's. Computer Programs are the original (not copied) and at least half the price of what we pay here. Unsure about other shopping though.... and I have never been to Thailand.
Depening on what you intend to shop for.
Clothings & shoes are cheaper in Thailand, but don't expect very good quality.
Electronic gadgets & accessories, Malaysia.
Food, both are just as good.
Traffic jams, almost the same, bad.
People, same, warm & friendly, difference? Thais are more soft-spoken.
Thailand is a much better place for inexpensive shopping.
Thailand of course. What you can find in KL you get it in Thailand too.At a much cheaper price.
