French Polynesia: When is the better time to go and the least expensive?

Travel Info
Is there such a thing as the best time to go to French Polynesia (Tahiti or Bora Bora) and is there such a thing as when it's least expensive? Is there a bad season and/or a peak season I should avoid? I want to plan something for next year for my wife and from the looks of it, seems like I have to save a pretty dime... what airlines go out that way? Is Tahiti Air Nui the only one? Any further information is appreciated. Just wondering if it's all really worth it or if there are other romantic destinations with "over-water bongaloows" that we should consider... any info is appreciated.

Travel Tips
We flew out of LAX on New Zealand airlines. I think the flight was about 8-9 hours.
The high season starts around April 1rst. Thats when the prices go way up, but it's also the start of the good weather.
We stayed in Tahiti for 3 nights in an over the water bungalow, absolutley beautiful. The resort was called the Beachcomber Inter-Continental. Very very expensive though. I think we paid over 500.00USD a night. The food & drinks were also really expensive.
We ended up taking the bus into Papeete and wandering around the market to pickup things to take back to the hotel.
On the 4th day we got on our cruise the Radisson Seven Seas..Paul Gaugin.
Since we stayed on the ship we didn't need a hotel in Moorea or Bora Bora. However I can say that they're more expensive than Tahiti.
Bora Bora is a stunning Island. The water is so clear you can see down 100 ft in spots. The snorkeling is amazing too, and we fed the sharks & manta rays several times.

On to one of my favorites....Fiji. The nicest people you'll ever meet.
We stayed at Castaway Island, and although there is no over water bungalows they have the most beautiful cottages right on the ocean. # 37 was ours & one of the best.
The prices were alot cheaper than Tahiti and almost as beautiful. The Island is small, so only the one resort. There's a bar & restaraunt that look out over the sea. There's a reef right out front, so the snorkeling is amazing. You can kayak around the island or take optional tours. Highly recommended.

Our # 3 favorite.... Cook Islands
You take the same flight as the one to Tahiti. It stops there first and then another couple of hours to Rarotonga. We stayed at the Rarotongan Beach Resort. They have a variety of rooms, and its the largest resort on the Island. 150 rooms.
There is alot of smaller properties. If you're looking for something smallish & romantic I would suggest the Moana Sands. The beach out front is one of the best, and I hear the staff are the friendliest ever. The Island is quite small, so you can rent a scooter to get around. Auvra is the main town, and there's shops, restaraunts scattered around the Island.
We never made it to Atutaki but I think there might be over the water bungalows there. Its about a 1 hr flight from Rarotonga on a small plane. It is often compared to Bora Bora.

Well have fun deciding. All 3 of them are beautiful.
