Travel Tips
Best Time Of The Year To Travel

Singapore, Malaysia & Thailand being equatorial countries, is generally sunny and rainfalls occur throughout the year. It usually rains more frequently during the months of December -February (Monsoon). Still, November - January is actually an ideal period.

Suggested Mode of Transportation (Budget)

Singapore - KL: Bus (5 hrs/ USD 10-15 per pax)
KL - Penang: Bus (5hrs/ USD 10-15 per pax)
Penang - Phuket: Firefly Airlines (1hr / USD 50 per pax)

Things To See;

Singapore;
Singapore Zoo (Night), Asian Civilisation Museum, War Museum, Well refurbished colonial structures, numerous man made attractions.

Kuala Lumpur;
Batu Caves Temple, Petronas Twin Towers, KL Eye (London Eye), Chinatown (Bazaar/Shopping), KL Tower Observation Deck). Lake Gardens AVOID: National Zoo, National Museum, Bird Park (Much improvement needed)

Penang:
Just take a city tour, interesting colonial structures including the city hall, fort cornwallis, st george's church. Ferringhi beach has been a favourite for sun lovers and most of the reknown beach resorts are situated.

Phuket:
Another beach resort enclave but plenty of natural attractions such as the limestone formation, you'll be sure to do plenty of beach hopping here. among the favoruite attractions is the phuket fantasea cultural show. What i enjoyed most in phuket was the sea-cave canoeing and white water rafting, it was simply exhilarating.

Daily Budget
With the exception of singapore, you don't require much money to enjoy yourselves. Food is cheap here (as low as USD 15 per day/per couple) and public transporation is reasonably priced. My friends from the US had came over for a holiday and had a similar itinery as the one you're planning and i remember each of them had a budget of USD1k excluding accomodation and they managed to spend 3 weeks in SEA (backpackers).

As for tips, many tour operators here simply organize tours which can be a complete waste of time and not to mention money. therefore be sure to do so some ground work and check with the locals whats worth visiting.

I'd recommend you get a Lonely Planet guidebook, i find it to be the best point of reference especially if you are planning to visit on a budget trip.
Others
I don't know about you, but I certainly read my country's travel advisory. My country's advisory for land travel from Malaysia to Bangkok is not advisable because of the on-going threats.
