Cambodia and Vietnam.....cool places to stay? |
Travel Info I'm thinking of backpackers places where I can meet other travellers rather than the luxury stuff.... Travel Tips Both countries have their backpacker places. I'm not going to mention places specifically, coz there's way too many and it's much better to find them on your own (ie don't just do the LP tour of Vn like too many others) Vietnam Hanoi - check out the older district where there's a glut of cheaper accommodation, bars and restaurants. Saigon - the area called Pham Ngu Lao is like Vietnam's version of Khoa San Road, cheap accommodation, food, bars, and loads of backpackers. Nha Trang - same same, the bars along the beach will allow you to meet heaps of other travellers. Hue - not many bars here, and the accom is more dispersed, but on the southern shore along Huong Vuong street you'll see a few places were foreigners gather. Cat Ba - heaps and heaps of accom and restaurants and if you can't find someone to talk to here you're never likely to. Hai Phong - much the same as Cat Ba, but still on the mainland. Both are good jumping off points to visit Halong Bay, which you'll more than likely do a tour through anyway, so you'll meet people on the boat (plus you can stay overnight on the boats too, which is good fun). Sapa - not a large town so find a place to stay, go on a trek, and you'll surely meet up with others. Can Tho, My Tho, Cau Doc - most likely you'll do a tour out to the Mekong Delta anyway, so you'll meet others on this (cheap tours found in Pham Ngu Lao). Dalat - hmm, not the usual destination for backpackers, but there's a few nice bars and plenty of decent accom, so you'll be ok here too. Dien Bien Phu - again not the usual backpacker trail, but once you've found accom you should bump into other foreigners. Or go out there with people you鈥檝e met in Hanoi and/or Sapa. Hoi An - too many places to stay at and eat at (not to mention getting something tailored at), so go in blind, choose anywhere and enjoy. Da Nang - plenty here too, but most people stay at Hoi An and visit here when passing through to/from Hue. Vung Tao - typical beach side town, with plenty of places to stay and eat, so easy to meet others. To get a better appreciation of the country and its people, why not try and visit places less touristy, like the bottom coast of the Mekong Delta (Ca Mau, Rach Gia, Ha Tien, or jump over to Phu Quoc Island) or travel along the mountain ranges that are closer to the Cambodian/Vietnam border (Buon Ma Thout, Pleiku, Kon Tum). Probably one of the best places to meet others (both foreigners and locals) is on the train. Take it at least part of the way between Hanoi and Saigon (or Hanoi to Lao Cai) and mak some new friends. Cambodia The only guide you need here is http://www.canbypublications.com/... or you can pick up their free books in many cafes and hotels in the major cities. Phnom Penh 鈥?the accom near the Boeung Kak Lake is the cheapest and will have plenty of other travellers hanging out there, there鈥檚 also plenty of decent places closer to the Mekong River, with many restaurants and bars scattered around the town/city. Siem Reap 鈥?as mentioned by others, not overly large and a street full of bars and some others around the corner too. Sihanoukville 鈥?kind of Wild Westish, some places close to town, others out near the beaches. Take your pick and move if you鈥檙e not happy. Kampot & Kep 鈥?also along the coast and very small, so no matter where you stay you鈥檒l meet people. Koh Kong 鈥?on the way to/from Thailand, most people just pass through here, but it鈥檚 got some scenery and a few nice hotels, but not many foreigners. Battambang 鈥?the 2nd largest town in Cmb, but still very small. There鈥檚 a few places dotted around the market and along the river, all reasonable and you鈥檙e bond to bump into others. Pailin 鈥?tiny mining town, with a few nice places, but not a lot of people visit here (so to me that鈥檚 one good reason to go). Kampong Cham, and Kampong Thom, both small towns too, so again pick somewhere central and you鈥檒l find others just hanging out. Kratie, Stung Treng, Sen Monorom, Bunlung, and Choam Kaen all tiny places, which are too remote or not on the usual tourist trail for most people, so well worth a visit if for nothing else than to meet some amazing Khmer people. I know this information is rather scant, but I truly believe you鈥檒l have a much better time if you don鈥檛 get directed to this or that hotel. Once you鈥檝e been in-country for a few days you鈥檒l get the gist of how things run and learn as you go along. All the best for your trip and I鈥檝e no doubt you鈥檒l have an amazing experience no matter where you stay and who you meet. Others should be okay that war is over. Good choice, plenty to see and do yes just came back from vietnam and cambodia. i booked through www.asiarooms.com. They display rates and guests' ratings which have been right so far. you can easily find a place which suits your needs. If you are going to siem reap (cambodia), it's such a small town that you will be able to meet travellers anywhere. In siem reap, a good place to meet other travellers will be pub street. They have bars (hence the name), live bands, cheap cocktails and food. And it's very safe to walk around. I liked cambodia better than vietnam. happy trip! |
