Efficient way to Travel SE Asia before teaching in Thailand?

Travel Info
I will be flying to Southeast Asia from New York en route to teach English in Thailand. I'd also like to travel to Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Singapore. If my budget permits I would also like to travel to India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, basically anywhere I can reach from Thailand without TOO much trouble.

I want to fly out at the beginning of October. Should I buy a one-way ticket since I will be in Bangkok for a year? Should I buy the ticket to another city and work my way over to Bangkok? Where should I go first? Any suggestions on how I can get to at least some of these places efficiently? So many decisions, I don't know where to start! Help!

Travel Tips
You can begin by arriving in Sri Lanka. From there, you can fly into India, preferably New Delhi and stay for a few days and move onwards by road (bus) into Nepal. From Nepal again you'll need to fly to Kolkata, India and travel by train up to the Indo-Myanmarese border. Cross by road/ river ferry into Myanmar and travel by road to Yangon. From Yangon, you can travel with any organized tour company that will take you to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos and eventually bring you to Thailand. Budget carrier Air Asia also connects Bangkok with Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. You can then travel to Malaysia by train and onwards to Singapore by road or train.
Others
Definitely a one-way ticket. Living in Asia provides many great opportunities to hop to other countries during your vacays. Once you make friends with others in Thailand, you will have travel buddies. My favorite spots to visit in Asia (so far) are Ho Chi Min City (Saigon), Vietnam, and Bangkok, Thailand. I hear Kuala Lumpur is great, but haven't been there yet. Japan is a favorite vacation spot for the wealthy, but that's not me! Singapore was great, but the reason I liked it was that it reminded me of the U.S. -- very western for an Asian city/country. I did some very good shopping there! Shopping is also good in Seoul, Korea, but the people are not friendly.

I think if you check the airlines, you will see the cities that flights into Bangkok typically go through, such as Taipei, or Tokyo.

Enjoy!
