It's simply a slogan and only a matter of opinion if you really think Hong Kong is the "Pearl of the Orient." Well the Philippines is nice, I must admit, but Hong Kong does have more of a deseriable look and appeal. I love both places. Others Hong Kong was governed by the British till about 10 years ago. The British colonials were excellent at public relations and hence, were the first to claim the title 'Pearl of the Orient'. The British encouraged trade and tourism and the country also benefitted from neighboring China. Major British firms and multi-nationals were attracted to Hong Kong as an investment hub or gateway to the Far East due to attractive terms, conditions, laws and other benefits offered during the British rule. The Philippines, being Asia's first republic and a sovereign country, had to develop its industries on its own merit, with whatever funding the private and public sector was able to raise. The Philippines realized the potential of the tourism industry rather late due to many reasons, including the long dictatorial regime of President Marcos, during which foreign tourists shunned travel to that country unless absolutely essential. And after Marcos' exit, the country had to grapple with more pressing internal needs rather than focus on PR aimed at attracting tourists. travel writer Few countries claim to be the Pearl of the Orient, Penang, Malaysia was also named the Pearl of The Orient by Captain Sir Francis Light. This is basically marketing tactics. They liken the sight as a shiny pearl, hence the name Pearl of the Orient. |
