Are Singaporeans more English-proficient than their Hong Kong counterparts? |
Travel Info Are Singaporeans more English-proficient than their Hong Kong counterparts? Travel Tips Yes I think so. Almost all Singaporeans speak and understand English. While in Hong Kong, most young professionals and kids speak and understand English. While a certain percentage older people only know Chinese language. I just base this on my travel experience. But in Hong Kong, when you go to shops and tourist areas, the people know English. But when you go to the little streets and local markets, they may not understand your English. Others I have visited both countries and in my opinion Singaporeans are more English proficient. A wise 26 yrs old pilot. (Hey, that's me!) :o) Generally YES! 1.Singaporean use "english" as the main language to communicate among themselves (from one Chinese to another) they even think in "english" - this is rare in HongKong 2.Singapore has one of the highest educational standards in the world; English language tutors come from the Commonwealth countries 3. Singapore Leaders are fluent mainly in the English language; while its esteemed HongKong counterparts can speak equally well in English, Mandarin, and/or Cantonese As an English speaker having lived in both cities I would have to agreee that Singaporeans are the more proficient English speakers. English is the main language for day to day living in Singapore whereas in Hong Kong it's Cantonese. Singapore is more english proficient than Hong Kong. I can live, work and study here knowing and using only the English language. Of course Singaporeans are more English-proficient. English is the medium of instruction for education for all Singaporeans. For HK residents, it is predominantly Cantonese and Mandarin. A few years ago, I chatted with my HK supplier in the cab in English. The cab driver did a double turn and asked him point blank in Cantonese "Hey, isn't he Chinese??? Why are you speaking English?" Go figure. |
