What are Asian people like? 鈥擡scaping from stereotypes? |
Travel Info Hello, I would like to know which are the differences between Asian and western cultures from an Asian point of view, as a way to broaden my own perspective of things. What can you tell me about Asian people? How do you consider them different from Europeans or Americans? Thank you for your answers. Travel Tips Asian cultures have been greatly influenced by Confucius who talked about respect for your elders. That shifts the priority to group interests rather than rights of the individuals. Asians in general tend to value conformity higher than Europeans or Americans who would more often champion individual rights. Religion is important to all cultures. The main religions, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taosim, Judaism originate from Asia. I find that Asians are generally more passionate about religion; Europeans and Americans are more secular. Others Why don't you just ask an Asian. All the Asians I knew in college were really cool people, so is Mr. Yammaha, a drummer I am currently working with. Good times for all. One of my best friends in a Korean exchange student and there is a major difference in their culture compared to that of the US culture. In Korea, they tend to highlight studying very highly and they put a lot of pressure on their kids to do well and be sucessful. She told me that many parents there want their kids to attend the best colleges, because the name is very important. They basically value education a little more than most Americans do. Well, based on Japan, China, and Korea, Asians tend to value racial homogeneity which is pretty controversial in the US. In Japan you often see signs that read "Japanese only" or "Asians only", while that would not be tolerated in the west. And in those aforementioned countries they often look down on homosexuals. Western society is generally more open minded towards differences in people. learning about China, Japan, and Korea Asia is so vast with different ethnic people - India, China, Japan, Korea, Malay archiepelago - what's observed here are only some incidences between one from an Asian background and the other from a Western culture. They are not meant to refer to Asians in general - that would be stereotyping. "Bring your own beer!" my American friend once told me over the phone; an Asian would never say this. They would welcome you to their homes and offer you drinks. "Don't call after 9, it makes us nervous" this Swiss girl once reminded me. I guess Westerners treasure and guard their privacy more. "Look at those fairies!" overheard this comment in London when the Turkish men saw Asian guys putting their arms around their friends. In some Asian societies, straight guys friends do act like this in public. They are not gays! "Why aren't you using a charge card to pay?" as my Swiss friend forked out 300++ Swiss Francs in cash. Credit cards are considered a status thing in Asia; a convenience in America; a bad habit by some Europeans (you're spending money you've not earned yet). "It's not considered rude to stare!" - one of the lines from the "Esso manual on ethics" distributed to expats in the Far East. Asians are more curious, inquisitive, bordering on nosy - it can be annoying to Westerners. I have no idea what some of those people are saying about religion and Asians. If you mean Asian as in "Mongoloid", then no major religion originated from Asia besides Shinto. Asians are generally very practical when it comes to religion unlike the west where dogma dominates in some areas. Asian parents would rather have their children live with them until they get married. While in America, it seems people prefer to throw their kids out as soon as possible. |
