Recommendations on East Asian travel destinations in July and August? |
Travel Info Hi everyone, I'll be in Hong Kong during the hot and humid summer months of July and August. But I am also planning to do some travelling to the nearby countries... probably to ONE of the following locations: Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, or Thailand My question is: which of the places would you recommend to visit during this time of the year and what's there to see? Thanks! Travel Tips I can tell you about Thailand where I live but I am sure that every country on your list is going to have many interesting things. Here are some suggestions of places to go in Thailand. Bangkok & Central Thailand:- 1) Grand Palace Bangkok 2) Vimanmek Mansion (royal palace) Bangkok 3) Thai Massage - the traditional massage is called 'Nuat Thai' and there are hundreds of places for this in Bangkok. This is proper Thai massage. However, there are also quite a few places that cater for customers wanting something sexier. 4) Safari World Thailand - safari park and open zoo http://www.thailandtravelservices.com/sa... 5) Thailand Dreamworld - amusement park (includes snow dome & grown-ups size go-kart track, rollercoasters, etc.) 6) Day trip to a Floating Market. The most popular floating market for tourists who come to visit Central Thailand is Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. http://www.thailandtravelservices.com/fl... 7) Day trip to Ayutthaya - old capital of Thailand - 50 miles north of Ayutthaya 8) Day trip to Kanchanaburi Thailand - west of Bangkok. You can see the bridge over the river kwai and take a journey on the death railway. http://www.thailandtravelservices.com/ri... 9) Bangkok Weekend Market (Chatuchak market) 10) Suan Lum Night Market Bangkok (also has a big wheel) 11) National Museum (Bangkok) 12) Shopping - malls: MBK, Siam Paragon, Central World Plaza (they all have movie theaters too). 13) Shopping - local markets: Pratunarm market, Chinatown 14) Day trip to Khao Yai National Park - east of Bangkok. Khao Yai National park east of Bangkok is very interesting. You can drive up to the top of some mountains and also go to see some very big waterfalls in the National park. Khao Yai is very beautiful and has a lot of wildlife to see. You can easily see wild monkeys and deer. There are also many wild elephants in Khao Yai. 15) River Cruise on the Chao Phraya River 16) Dusit Zoo & Tropical Gardens 17) Temples - famous Bangkok temples include Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Marble Temple, The Temple of the Golden Buddha 18) You can learn all about snakes at the Snake Farm in Bangkok - there is also a show there that is quite fun 19) Jim Thompson's House Bangkok 20) Samphran Elephant Show & Crocodile Farm 21) Bang Pa-In Palace 22) Day trip to Nakhon Pathom 23) Muang Boran (Ancient City), south of Bangkok 24) Suan Pakkad Palace Bangkok 25) Golden Mount Bangkok 26) The Royal Barges Museum in Bangkok is where they have the ceremonial barges of the royal family. That should be enough Bangkok sightseeing for anyone. For general Thailand sightseeing:- North-East Thailand (Isan) 1) Phimai - Angkor Temple complex (also Phimai National Museum and Sai Ngam - Banyan tree). 2) Buriram (Prasat Hin Lhao Phanom Rung Historical Park) - another Angkor Temple complex - bigger than Phimai but harder to get to. 3) Prasat Meuang Tam - not far away from Prasat Rung - not sure how you will be there without a car. I remember there were some motorcycle riders offering rides for a price, but not so cheap. North Thailand (Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai) 1) Doi Inthanon - the highest mountain in Thailand (in Doi Inthanon National Park) 2) Waterfalls in Doi Inthanon National Park 3) Doi Tung (Doi Tung Royal Villa, Mae Fah Luang Garden) 4) Golden Triangle tour - the view from the hill of the river where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet ranks as a must see. 5) (Probably) Hill Tribes Tour (normally part of a Golden Triangle Tour) - more of a cultural awareness thing rather than a must see. Some people also recommend Chiang Mai Zoo. I am sure its very nice. I think there are a lot of places to see animals in and around Bangkok:- Safari World, Dusit Zoo, Siam Underwater world, Khao Yai National park, (even Dreamworld & Ayutthaya (Ayudhya) have elepant rides), Samut Prakarn Crocodile Farm & Zoo, Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute (Snake Farm, Bangkok). Even, Muang Boran, that doesn't even promote istelf as a place to see animals has a deer reserve for Hog Deer, sometimes they can also be seen wandering around the 'ancient' monuments. South Central Thailand 1) Phra Ramarajnivet Palace, Petchaburi 2) Phra Nakhom Khiri Palace, Petchaburi 3) Hua-Hin beach 4) Wat Khoa Takiep, Hua-Hin - if you are in Hua-Hin anyway, its worth going to as it a pretty hill-top temple. There is a Traditional Thai design part to the temple, but, in addition, slightly down the hill, near to the cliff, there is an interesting Chinese part. Also, there are lots of naughty monkeys within the grounds of the temple too. South Thailand/Beaches Beaches are an individual thing. Some people want a deserted beach, some prefer lots of people, bars and organised things to do, jet-skis, etc. However, my favourite is Koh Phi-Phi as it has the most beautiful beaches. For an island closer to Bangkok that I like, Koh Samet (National Park) is popular, especially post-tsunami as its in the Gulf of Thailand rather than off the west coast, but I don't particularly recommend the beach at Hat Sai Kaew where the cheap Baht1,000 a night bungalows are. Hat Ao Prao on the west part of the island is much nicer. However, its more expensive to stay there. Others Try to go to China since it will only be a domestic flight from Hong Kong. The airline fares are cheap. Go to Beijing for the Great Wall and Forbidden City. Or try Xi An and see the Terracotta Warriors. Or try Shanghai for an experience at the Bund. |
