Travel Tips It was in China's best interests to retain the Hong Kong Dollar in Hong Kong after the changeover in '97 as the Hong Kong dollar is considered to be a "hard currency." Due to its "peg" to the US dollar, it is more accepted for goods and services, more liquid in the Forex (currency trading) and considered more stable. The yuan (rmb), especially in '97 was considered a soft currency. Others because they operate under british law. its been the currency of HK since 1937, though, Britain gave up HK to China but since HK is such a major place to do business and stuff, china agreed to let HK operate under the same laws they had when under british rule. i went to Hong Kong Because HK is a self-administrative region, it's Mao's brain-child of one country two system. HK is known as Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region (HK SAR), China. Basically it's not exactly China but still under China. |
