I've only been once but Kota Kinabalu is lovely, and in exotic Borneo.
Mt. Kinabalu is beautiful and worth seeing.
Also Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.

Koh Samui is a great tourist destination and caters both to back packers and higher end tourists.
Angthong National Marine Park is beautiful and worth going for a day trip.

Butterfly Garden
Waterfalls
Take a tree top tour
Go elephant trekking
Visit the rum distillery
Or just enjoy the endless beaches
