Vacations were unheard of other than a week at the local beach, or a week visiting relatives. Travel as we know didn't come of age until commercial airfare became affordable after WWII. Otherwise travel was for the rich or adventurer types. It was just too expensive and people couldn't be away from work without getting fired.
