Question about American safety in China?

Travel Info
I asked previously about how safe is it for an American to visit China. I had asked if it was safe, or if you would end up in a "car accident".

I didn't mean anything about driving. I meant to allude to how certain people disappear. Obviously, since I wasn't planning to lead any cultural revolutions or anything, I think I'm a little bit safer.

Just curious about those Americans who have been in China, Korea, Japan, etc how you felt.

Seems, you had seen too many bad movies recently...China is very safe for foreign tourists. I am a German national myself and I had been to China, Korea and Japan several times - and these countries are all much safer than most U.S. cities....

Again, you probably have seen too many bad movies.

Greetings from Germany....
Don't fret. I've stayed in Beijing for 2 months (traveled to Shanghai and other places for a week) and I'm back in the states right now. The Chinese welcomes tourists for the obvious reasons. As for "how I felt", it's the same "foreigner/tourist" feeling when you visit any foreign country.
Ummm. America is MUCH more dangerous than China.
You have more chances of dissapearing in America than in China, and you have more chances of being mugged, robbed or assulted in the US than in China... as a foreigner that is.

Chinese take their duty as a host seriously, foreigners contribute to the boom of most capital cities and the chinese government ensures that the mobs leave foreigners alone. As a result, if a chinese robs a foreigner more than 2000 rmb (bout 300 dollars) he gets executed. This of course is to the discretion of courts but most chinese underground know to leave foreigners alone or get hit hard. Noone wants bad publicity.

As a result, streets are safe (aside from accidents that is) My GF says Shanghai is the only city she can walk through at any hour of the night and in any district without feeling afraid. Thre are also guards in front of most buildings, entrences... dont worry, its safe.

America on the other hand.... even I get creeped out in some neighborhoods and i'm almost 6f5. Sorry, the only report I had of people dissapearing was by UFO or CIA.

Life is great here, you will laugh at your worries once here. Enjoy!
been in Shanghai for 4 years, got my Bicycle stolen once
China is amazingly safe. Your biggest crime concern here will be pickpockets. Always keep your bag in sight and your wallet where it can't be lifted. I had my backpack stolen from right next to my feet at a McDonald's. I was talking to a friend and didn't notice it was gone until too late. I know two other friends who also had bags stolen from them in restaurants within the last year. This is the most likely crime that could happen to you. However, you will be much safer than in the states. I often go out at 11pm or so to go to the club on the weekends. I have to walk several streets to get a taxi and I never worry about my safety. One of the things I hate about going home for a visit is that I have to get my guard up again because America is much scarier than China.
