Why did the west lose most of its former colonies in Asia and Africa? |
Travel Info Why did the US lose the Philippines? but still holds on to Hawaii, Guam, etc? Travel Tips The United States lost the Philippines because the Filipinos did not want to be a United States colony. Also, in the case of the Philippines, the U.S. invaded under the guise to remove the Spanish from the nation, but then became another colonial ruler, which angered the Filipinos. In Hawaii, the United States set up businesses, which boosted their economy and made them dependent upon the United States. There were Hawaiians that did not want to be a state, but Hawaii did not have a large uprising because the United States controlled most of their economy, so if it left, they would've lost a lot of their jobs. In Asia, most European powers lost their colonies after WWII. They already did not like the European powers, and when the Japanese surrendered and left these nations, they gave them their weapons and encouraged them to fight for their freedom. Most of the nations did this, and the cost of war was too much for the European nations, so they gave them independence. In Africa, they simply fought for independence, and once again, the war costs were just not reasonable enough for Europe to fight to keep control. Others Because they (the US) has emptied the Philippines, taken everything away. See how poor the Philippines is? Usually because it was becoming too costly to maintain their vassal states and when they lose strategic importance. Cheaper to grant them independence than to commit expensive own manpower and logistics overseas. |
