I travelled to Japan and South Korea. I noticed that people bumped into you without saying sorry.? |
Travel Info Is that normal? Travel Tips I lived in both places. One year in Seoul and three years in Japan. Yes, it is normal. Seoul and Tokyo are two of the biggest cities in the world. In Tokyo alone, there are 20+ million people. In Seoul, there are 12 million or so people. There aren't being rude. There are just so crowded that bumping into other people is expected, especially in certain areas. They don't say sorry because it happens so much. These cities are so crowded that bumping into others is inevitable and they would never get anywhere if they stopped to say sorry everytime it happened. Others Maybe you bumped into them? Normally you are responsible for saying sorry as a foreigner. In Japan we take care not to bump into other people and we don`t usually talk to strangers. Sorry. Me too...I am always bumping? into someone here in Japan. People move too fast and they hit me and I say, "sorry". In Korea I have found people to be more rude, although I don`t know if this is a fact. The trains in Japan are murder to get into and out of...here all rules of civility are pretty much ignored. I don`t travel during rush times for this reason. Best of luck! In most of Asia, people try not to have any verbal interaction in an accident because even if you are innocent you might get more trouble. That happens in New York too.. it was a two difference thing about this topic,if it was so many people around bumping then no problem, but if nobody around and the guy bump into you then he should say sorry heh?but i guess he does say it but do you speak korean or japanese to understand it?like gomen nasai in japanese? But i would not mind it,we are a tourist so just smile and forget it,it happen when you are in a big city always, even here in chicago shopping malls! the truth is i feel happy to travel to those countries so i do not mind a small incident anyway! These can happen to very crowded places and really busy spots. I just understand them to avoid any hassle. It's different when you are hurt. I've been to Hong Kong and this 7 year old kid steps on my toe and did not say sorry, I wanted to call his attention and his parents' attention but hey, I just left and avoided the hassle. My Singaporean friend often says Korean group-tourists in Singapore bump Singaporean, but never say anything. Maybe you saw their real characteristics. But how about Japanese tourist in Singapore? And when you were in Japan, haven't you been walking in crowded area? such as Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Roppongi, Tokyo, etc. And wasn't it night time or rush hours? If so, only their destinations(like their home, office, etc) were in their mind. In this last 15 years, saying nothing became normal in Tokyo. I don't know why (of course not everybody). I saw same phenomenon near Taipei station in Taiwan as well. I'd like to stand up in the Orchurd station during 7:30-9AM and see how it would be. |
