Is it safe to swim in the ocean in Darwin at this time of year? |
Travel Info Is it safe to swim in the ocean in Darwin at this time of year? Travel Tips Generally it is considered to be safe to swim in the ocean in the dry season, which is roughly between the months of May to October. The biggest threat during the rest of the year is from the Box Jellyfish, which is deadly. If its the crocs you are worried about, they are usually found in the waterways, if a waterway is known to be inhabited by a croc, it will have warning signs posted. However crocodiles have been known to swim in the oceans, but are not likely to attack swimmers. Personally I would stick to the known safe public swimming pools, springs and Billabongs that Darwin has to offer Others Well...don't know if the Box Jelly fish are around at this time of year but the crocodiles are all year round! I personally would NEVER swim in Darwin. Well seeing as there is always front page news about crocs being caught in the harbour, I would say never. But stingers are more or a worry to you Depends on your definition of safe. Everyone in Darwin has a pool, what does that tell you ? Australia dangerous and wonderful We have the most poisonous creature - blue ring octopus, very small kills in about 2 minutes. We also have an amazing range of poisonous spiders snakes, shore creatures (stone fish, looks like stone kills if you stand on it's sting) We have temperatures that go up to 47C in places like Marble Bar in top of Western Australia. We have cyclones, droughts etc. Me - my daughter was bitten by a baby dugite, a small black snake (baby dugites are worst because they give too much poison) twice. Worse she was bitten by a spike-tailed white spider - very small and rare. She is still alive because unlike wussy (that is an insulting name for cowards) foreigners I just got myself together, each time and drove her to one of our MAGNIFICENT hospitals and she was treated properly with-out cost. Even our Kangaroos can be DANGEROUS. My late husband was BEATEN by a kangaroo, the skin on his back torn to shreds. Before you say any-thing my husband was assisting a vet, by feeding the animal in an enclosure after it had been treated after being hit by a tourist's car. Australians live in a hostile country but do it with HUMOUR and COURAGE, with-out fuss. Yes, the blue ring which is found near Darwin, will kill you in 2 mins. but it is rare. The Crocs usually bite silly people who trail their hands in the water or set up tents near the water. Honestly you have a LOT more chance of being run over by a car. Or if you come from U.S.A of being killed by a gun. Most animals try to avoid humans who are big and dangerous. Gun owners are much more deliberate in their killing. Best LOOK for SIGNS and take advice then you'll be fine. Enjoy Darwin the people who live there are BRAVE and NICE. The sharks, jellyfish and crocodiles find it safe any time of the year. |
