Travel Info In what area of the North Island does it snow during the winter time? Cities? Travel Tips If you are wanting to check out local ski fields in the area and snow reports go to http://www.snow.co.nz/areas/area_index.a... and click on names to the right - the area will highlight on the map where it is, but click on the name for more info Others It is mainly the central North Island that is most affected, and the ski fields are in that area around the mountains of Ruapehu and Tongariro. no cities, but only the mountains...there may be a few little places in the higher parts of the plateau that may get a sprinkling... remember most cities in the South Island may only get none or 1 dump of snow each winter too!!! The coldest North Island place in winter is around Waiouru, and of course in the mountains; places like Ruapehu and Tongariro are ski resorts. Even in Wellington it rarely snows. We lived there for a year and it didn't snow even once. In the 22 years I lived in Wellington it snowed twice and was pretty much all gone by the end of the day. Apparently it snowed in Auckland about 50 years ago but global warming pretty much means that will never happen again. |
