Travel in New Zealand? |
Travel Info I am a 62 year old single woman wanting to see as much of the country as I can on a limited budget .Would it be cheaper to book an escorted tour in New Zealand or here in the U.K. ? Sensible answers only ,please ! Travel Tips My opinion tours can be expensive and not getting the 'discounted' rate with accommodation. You are better on your own and staying at backpackers for $20 a night. If you still want a tour package I would just do your research on the net to see your options and book once you are in NZ. It's a bit of a hard one, because there is so many different areas in NZ and where would you be spending most of your time. I would suggest the South island is better for touring at your own speed 鈥?more to see. Queenstown is the most expensive 鈥?it鈥檚 classed or compared to Aspen of USA. But is gorgeous there鈥?The Nelson region and Abel Tasman National Park is a MUST! http://nelsonnz.com Great beaches, vineyards, outdoor adventure and art centres. Near by is Abel Tasman National Park, http://www.abeltasman.co.nz Kaiterteri 鈥?golden sand beaches. Great site also - http://www.backpackerboard.co.nz... Others I was in New Zealand in November. Keep in mind that although NZ is a realatively small country, travel between destinations takes a long time by car or bus. Intra-country flights are not expensive and save a lot of time. Fly from the north island to the south island ( don't take the ferry) Don't spend alot of time in Auckland .....it is just another big city. There is a very economical way of seeing NZ: 1. Use a coach service like "Atomic Shuttle"; they do about 200 miles for the equivalent of about 拢10, if I remember correctly; 2. Stay in backpackers hostels; they cost between 拢6 and 拢15 per night (that's GBP) 3. Cook your own meals in the backpackers' hostels' kitchens (supermarket food costs about two-thirds of Tesco or ASDA prices here). I doubt that an escorted tour could be any cheaper than that. And think of all the extra time you could be spending here with the saved money. I recommend taking at least one month for a trip like this. Yes, it's a small country, but it's packed with stuff, and looks different around every corner. The best season is probably between February and April. It's the most settled then, and you get the autumn colours in the mountains - breathtaking! I can see why an escorted tour would be an attraction, as you get company, you get taken from A to B via C... but I agree that they are more expensive. You can do it for cheaper by yourself...there are cheap bus companies like Atomic shuttles or use Intercity if you don't want to fly anywhere....I think that flying is expensive in NZ, but it has some good deals from time to time, if you book in advance. I would chose some places to go...I'll put a couple of websites to look at.....as it depends on what you want to see (eg cities, scenery)..I would point out that some places are harder to get to as there is not regular transport to some places, or its regular just not frequent (eg 1 per day).....a hire car may be an option for some trips maybe???? Accommodation would be cheaper if you went to cheap places or hostels/back packers....rather than some of the hotels....so maybe if you work out a plan and book a few places and look at ways to get there it might work out better for you. Also you will meet people in some of the accommodation as you would have central areas to sit etc and you could even travel with them. http://www.newzealand.com/travel... http://www.aatravel.co.nz/main/index.php... http://www.nz.com/ Escorted tours in my opinion do not give you long enough to see the sites and cost far too much. The best way is to hire a car for a 1 way hire (hire it in Dunedin at the bottom of the south Island and work your way up the South Island and drop it off in Picton/Nelson and then do the same for the North Island.) Backpackers and bed and breakfasts are quite cheap in most places. I don't know where it would be cheaper but if you come here to our beautiful country (NZ) then I would probably recommend going round by yourself or really looking into finding the right tour for you as you don't want to miss all the good stuff or feel rushed. :) |
