I'd like to plan a trip to NZ, and I live in the UK...Rates? Places? Recommendations? |
Travel Info I have distant family in Australia, but we all plan on meeting up in New Zealand for a time. We're not quite sure how long we plan on staying, but are budget is a little on the "hell, we can do pretty much anything we want now that we've sold the family estate..." side I'm not one to know a kiwi from a kiwi, if you know what i mean... just anything you want to say really Travel Tips I live in New Zealand and am a tourism professional - I have worked in the industry for 14 years. I do not agree with the person who said to stick to the big smoke. Some of those cities are just another city. I think you need three weeks minimum for the country and need to see parts of both islands. In the North check out the Bay of Islands, Rotorua and other places like Napier which is a good wine region and if you are interested in architecture, they have stunning Art Deco achitecture. Auckland and Wellington are good cities but please do not spend all your time there. South Island - all of it. It is a very very diverse island. There are three great scenic train rides there that you can do - the Coastal pacific from Picton to Christchurch, the Tranz Alpine from Christchurch to Arthurs Pass (return or one way) and the Taieri Gorge Railway from Dunedin and back to Dunedin (it is a return trip). I have done all and all show New Zealands diverse scenery off marvellously. Check out Christchurch - a very English city. Go to the West coast to see the rain forests and Glaciers - go to Fiordland to see Milford and or Doubtful Sound. Go to Queenstown as this is the adventure capital of New Zealand and Wanaka for some R and R. Dunedin is a city rich in heritage and Wildlife. Check out the train ride I mentioned, the yellow eyed penguins, the Royal Albatross, Larnanch Castle etc etc. Also, go down to the Catlins and on to Stewart Island. If you need any other hints or suggestions you can PM me. Good luck and see you in New Zealand. Others depends where abouts you will be going. heres a few website you can have a look at www.wellingtonnz.com www.aucklandnz.com www.christchurch.org.nz Here you will find everything you need to enjoy your stay. From accommodation, restaurants and shops to sights and activities, transport and maps For activities to do you can either stick to the big smoke eg Auckland etc or try or go to smaller places like Queenstown for an adventure holiday. Try this website www.dosomething.co.nz for a range of different activities rotorua in the north and queenstown in the south would make a great start. aatravel is a good site. you didnt mention your ages so its hard to tell if you would be more intresed in jumping out of a plane or hot air balloning. try zorb and bungy. kaikoura and stewart island are great for wildlife. plenty of skiing in winter around wanaka and queenstown. rotorua has a lot of maori culture, and boiling mud pools. Auckland is the biggest city, Wellington is the capital. The South Island is beautiful, my partner and I spent just over two weeks travelling around and LOVED it. The highlight for me was a day trip we did out in Doubtful Sound where we got to see dolphins, seals and plenty of native bush. The boat trip left from Te Anau and was the whole day. My advice is to go with a smaller company, not the main one which I think is called Real Journeys, they are just not as personal. We also did a jet-boat ride up the river which was well worth it. As someone else mentioned, it is worth looking at www.aatravel.co.nz The site has information, activities and lovely photos. Enjoy your time in NZ, it really is a stunning country! |
