Off to New Zealand in 20 days.. So where to go? Is it also worth investing in the new Lonely Planet guide?

Travel Info
Also I was originally going to go for a month but am going to have to change the ticket..

Will two weeks be sufficient ? [ I can always go back there next summer if I like it which I'm sure I will ..].

Not looking forward to that long flight though!

Travel Tips
Two weeks is NEVER enough time to visit NZ :-)

You didn't mention what Island you are going to - so I'll brag about how good the South Island is as I used to live there.

From top of the south island start in Nelson with the great beaches, vineyards, outdoor adventure and art centres. http://www.nelsonnz.com

See Abel Tasman National park: http://www.abeltasman.co.nz - http://www.aquataxi.co.nz Seals will swim beside you if you want to go kayaking along the coast.

Whale watching is in Kaikoura. http://www.kaikoura.co.nz

Without advertising - yes Lonely Planet is pretty good.

Remember that it is winter down there so if you want a bit of sun stick to North Island.

Transport - rent a car (but they do drive on the left)

It all beautiful, just go!
Was there two months ago
if i was going i would ask someone where is the best place to go when you get there and you never know they might go with you
have a nice time
I'm off to oz soon one way ticket for me oh yeah
2 weeks is pushing it a bit but my niece is going for a wedding and will spend about that much time so I guess.....

It's a great place and they are great folks.
Do buy the guide as its always useful for other trips and its only prices and bits like that get out of date.

As to the flight - I have a morbid fear of flying but would never not go as my wife came from there and she needs to get to see her family etc. It's a grin and bear it thing really for me.!!

Have a good time. You'll be going back I guarantee it.
I would invest in some kind of travel guide (either lonely planet or rough guide..which ever you fancy) as this does give you some ideas as to what to do and see in each place.

2 weeks will be pushing it, but if you like it enough to come back, you can see some of the places you never got around to (or new places people you meet on the road will recommend).

It also depends on what you want to see as scenery wise there is a lot to offer...the South Island is considered much more pretty than the North Island, but there are a few things there people seem to like like Bay of Islands, Auckland, Rotorua, Tongariro National Park etc among others and maybe if you have some time you may could see some of these places (next time??)

In the South Island there is a bit to chose...skiing will be underway (if the temperature the last few days has anything to do with it..brrrrr) so thats an option and its reasonalbe prices here too.
Queenstown will be busy with the skiiers, but there is lots of other things to do there (adrenaline captial of NZ)..with jetboating, paragliding, skydiving bungy jumping etc...while you can also find these things all over the place, they are concentrated here (but might be cheaper in other places ..keep an eye out).
I personally love the West Coast of the South Island...the glaciers (Franz Josef and Fox) the bus, lakes (reflective ones like Lake Matheson) are just beautiful.....weather should be ok there too...as the rain really comes in spring/summer.

Mount Cook has some stunning views and could be an option...you could do a circular route from Christchurch either across Arthurs Pass (can do the Tranz Alpine train) and down the coast and then to Queenstown and back to Chch or the other way round....this way you would see a variety of scenery and places and you could do it over a week. That leaves you a week to see other places...maybe the North Island??? whale watching in Kaikoura maybe???
I will give you a couple of websites which maybe useful to you.
