Carrying on "Like a Pork Chop"? |
Travel Info There is a colloquial phrase in Australia to "carry on like a pork chop", maning that someone is behaving in a silly or stupid way, for example: "Mate, you're carrying on like a pork chop". What is the origin of this phrase, and in Australia what relation does silly behaviour have to this butcher's cut? Maybe I'm a stupid pom, but I just don't get it. Travel Tips Found this online...sounds pretty accurate but I can't be sure. Carrying on like a Pork chop This expression is a truncated version of the longer and more widespread phrase be like a pork chop in a synagogue; this has been around since the 1950s. Since pork is forbidden food for Jewish people, to describe something as being like a pork chop in a synagogue means that it is highly inappropriate, embarrassingly out of place, and quite unwelcome. The Australian expression carry on like a pork chop has now shifted the focus from inappropriateness to foolishness. (Often happens with truncated expressions 鈥?they kind of go their merry way!) Source(s): Aussie Girl Other Travel Tips The phrase comes from a 1950s advertising jingle for the yeast-based spread Vegemite. The jingle began: 鈥榃e're ..... pork chop: carry on like a pork chop! BRITISH BIRD! http://www.abc.net.au/newsradio/txt/s162... This is supposed to be of US origin. I had not heard it in Australia until about 10 years ago, as for the Vegemite jingles, I doubt that is true, I was a kid in the 1950s and I don't remember it. But we had no commercial radio audible where I lived so that might not mean much. Actually this is more likely to be the origin, at least I think so - http://abc.net.au/tv/canwehelp/txt/s1849... I had never heard the phrase until I met my Mother-in-law about 35 years ago. She was born and bred in South Australia and used this phrase often. I was from Queensland and had never heard it before. I don't think it has anything to do with Vegemite. I do know my Mother-in-law had been using the phrase for most of her life. She was born in the early 1920's. I can't find the origin, though. The FULL saying is "carrying on like a pork chop at a Jews wedding" !!!.so that explains how a pork chop would feel !!!!!!!!!!....(not at all comfortable !!!!!!!! ) (Ozzie gal here !!!) |
