I have been considering moving to Australia from the US. Has anyone here made that move?

I'm looking to go to college for marine biology and thought Australia would be an amazing place to learn. Can anyone tell me what I would need to do?

Travel Tips
G'day,

When you typed "moving", does this mean you have decided to migrate to Australia and then study?

If this is the case, then you will need to apply for a migration visa. You will need to contact or speak to people at the Australian Embassy/High Comm to discuss what chances and options available for you. Once you come and completed your study, your qualification will be accepted in Australia and pretty much all over the world.

If not, you will need to apply as an international student. You will need to apply to the uni, got offered a place and pay the required fees from the uni. Once paid the fees, you will then apply for a student visa.

Regardless of your status, there are only 41 universities in Australia, all of them are fully accredited and tightly regulated, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from.

The Australian uni's offering marine biology are as follows:
Deakin Uni (www.deakin.edu.au)
Macquarie Uni (www.mq.edu.au)
Uni of QLD (www.uq.edu.au)
Flinders Uni (www.flinders.edu.au)
UTS (www.uts.edu.au)
Uni of Adelaide (www.adelaide.edu.au)

Tuition fee & requirements will be available in those websites. Please make sure that the information you accessing are the ones for international students, not for local students, as there are some difference in regards to tuition fees. Once decided on the uni, fill in the application form and send it together with certified copy of your academic qualification (in English and original language). The process will take abt 2-3weeks, depending on the time of the year.

Hope this helps. Good luck on your move and study and welcome to Australia :) Source(s): www.idp.edu.au
Other Travel Tips
Please let me suggest that you visit there first. I moved from Seattle to New Zealand and don't care for it. The bad outweighs the scenery!

However, if you're just going to go for school, you'll find out that outside the US and Canada, universities only have 3 year BA/BS programs, and you don't get a good grounding in all around science. I've got a fisheries degree from the University of Washington. 5 hard years later, I've got a well-rounded education in ecology, genetics, physics, chemistry, biology, and calculus. I work in the environmental science field with many Kiwis and their lack of a rounded education really shows up in their work products.

Another piece of advice is for you to search a few job finding sites and see what the demand is for a marine biologist. Search for environmental and see what you come up with. Hydrogeologists and mine engineers are in huge demand. Just my two cents for you.
PLEASE NOTE: Australia and New Zealand are COMPLETELY Different places. Like Canada and USA! Make sure the course you want to do in Australia, is valid in USA (generally it will be).

Australia is a great place, but don't think its a small place, Sydney (largest city in Aus) is 4.2million people and takes about 3 hours to get across in peak hour traffic.

Accommodation is very expensive in the large cities. I would recommend the Gold Coast, as accommodation is about $US150 a week for University (what we call college) students, not to bad. Another other thing is climate. If you want perfect weather go to the Gold Coast (in winter doesnt get below 60 degrees and in summer above 90 degrees.)

Another thing to remember that a lot of Australians don't particularly like Americans. Don't get me wrong, Australia is probably the most welcoming country, but its not like being in USA. If you come here DON'T spell 'color'. ITS COLOUR! lol.

A lot of Australians won't admit it, but Australia is JUST LIKE usa. The change won't be to big. A quick question what part of the united states do you live now?

Must know these slang words/terms:

Bloody Hell - swearing, about as offensive as saying S.hi.t.

How are you going? = Sort of means Are you well?/ Are you having a good day?

Mate - not offensive term, like friend, but you can say it to anyone (even people you just met)

I am Australian (and have never been to the states) so I cant tell you any more...

I plan to go to NYC just after I finish high school, before college, for what we call "Schoolies", it is like a 1-2 week celebration after year 12 (end of 2008 for me). So any advise would be appreciated.

I would like to keep in contact via email if you have any more questions/ are just excited and want to talk! Because I can't wait for my trip to the US! If you would; please email me;

Hope to here from you!
My Brain!!!!!!!
Hi,yes in 1956 an American was seen entering Australia.
Regards Waltz.
Hi Lee, well I have not moved from the states to Australia, however my husband who I met last year made the journey last year to come from the US to Australia to study Nursing through USQ in Toowoomba.

Firstly he thought it was close to a beach, he got that wrong we are two hours away from the beach.
my suggestion is not too move to the Gold Coast as Alex L mentions. firstly living costs there are two expensive. and unless you are planning to stay for the whole duration of studies in a back packers hotel than you can definitely count out the $150 Aus accommodation, in Toowoomba the cheapest is $85 week and the standard is bordering on a slum, like conditions, by the way I do not recommend coming to Toowoomba. my husband says that the Gold Coast is like Wakiki beach so i guess that means they are over run with tourists as well.

Now my husband has some Ideas on what you should do...

1. apply for a passport first it takes around 6-8 weeks minimum in the US " and it will probably take longer at the moment as there is a huge back log apperently."

2. Pick a school, do the research on marine biology, a suggestion from meeting people is that Northern Queensland has some good places and it is also on the great barrier reef. So maybe look there. Also look at what qualifications you need. I do know that you may need a scuba diving license it would not hurt to get one.

3. Enroll in the school and wait for an "ecoe " electronic confirmation of enrollment' this is what you need to get the student visa, which will last for the duration of your program,

4. MONEY!!! hopefully you have enough, to get the visa you have to attest that you have access to financial resources. In all likely hood around $90,000 US. ie. savings, scholarships, loans and parents you have to state what kind you have access too.

5.another part of the visa is having a full physical including, x-ray for tuberculoses and hiv testing.

my husband jokes that you need to pass the VB test, you have to be able to ingest a lot of it and keep it down.

there is a lot of things that need to be done and it could take along time to explain so email us at vreis23@yahoo.com.au
and we will try to answer it as best as we can.

I should also note that my husband has pulled out of University as there fees are quite expensive. my husband also says that it was quite a shock on the prices of everyday items over here and also the price and size of food it is a big shock. value for money is not used to describe Australia's everyday costs .

he says to tell you that two people can spend twenty dollars at Macdonald's and with no super size offer.

for 4 liters of milk there it is around $ 2.50 in the US and here in Australia there is no 4 liters the 3 liters is around $5.00

everything is smaller and more expensive.

in conclusion

Okay so just research, and remember to choose somewhere warm.

And by the way Australians do take really well to Americans...
I married one and I would not give him away for anything.
