Can I get to know more about Rockhampton Queens land australia ?.? |
Travel Info I have a job offer form a hospital there. I am a health care professional from india. I would like to know about the place, the means to public transport and the hosuing facilities available.and the Indian community Travel Tips Rockhampton is a large (by Australian standards) provincial town in Central Queensland. It is just north of the Tropic of Capricorn and is on the banks of the Fitzroy River. It was founded in about 1859 and was the home for many years of the founder of British Petroleum. (BP) who made most of his initial fortune from the gold and copper mines at Mount Morgan in the hills to the south west. http://www.rockhampton.qld.gov.au/... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/rockhampton... http://www.walkabout.com.au/locations/ql... The climate is tropical and can be hot and humid between November and February, mostly in December and January. It was once called the city of sin, sweat and sorrow, that was over 100 years ago. The main hospital is on a hill just to the south and west of the central part of the city and is a fairly large establishment. One set of wards was built in the late 1960s or early 1970s and another set were built in the 1980s or 1990s, replacing the old buildings from the early 20th century. There is or was extensive nurse accommodation on the site. The hospital covers all sorts of treatment but may lack some of the newer forms of diagnostic equipment like NMR. Medical, surgical and midwifery areas are all covered, there is an extensive outpatient clinic and there are some facilities for acute mental patients. As far as I know nurses are trained in the hospital and medicos intern there too. The Royal Flying Doctor Service transports patients to Rockhampton. Like all long established hospitals there is a mixture of old and new. I was an inpatient there in 1981. if you can find a street map of Rockhampton on the net, the hospital is on Canning Street. In 2003-2005 there had been some trouble with the management, clinicians had left the hospital in a stream, leaving it understaffed. However this situation may have been alleviated since. Rockhampton is served by buses and taxis. You can be sure a bus service goes to this hospital but it's hours and routes I do not know. Accommodation has been hard to find in Rockhampton but in recent years the city has expanded a lot and there are more choices than there once were. If you lack private transport your choice of housing may be in the suburb of Wandal, which is close to the hospital. Many people in Rockhampton still ride bicycles as the city is mostly flat and the streets are wide and do not have enormous car traffic. The local newspaper is called "The Morning Bulletin" http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/... This home page has a sidebar to the left with a link to their real estate pages. You should be able to view some of the currently available housing from there. Also search the sites for the real estate agents "L J. Hooker" and "Elders" for their Rockhampton listings. You should be aware of the Jayant Patel scandal which developed a few years ago at the Bundaberg base Hospital, a few hundred kilometers away from Rockhampton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/jayant_pate... There is a small Indian community in Rockhampton, enough to organise a Diwali festival last year. http://www.rockhampton.qld.gov.au/search... Others Try the City Council of Rockhampton website http://www.rockhampton.qld.gov.au... It has maps - and new visitor information - migrant info, transport etc go through all the links of the left hand side. For renting a property go to http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin/rse... and put in a search under Rockhampton Welcome to Aussie ! |
