What's the go with asking Australians if they ride kangaroos? |
Travel Info I still get tourists (mainly from North America) asking if we ride kangaroos to work or school. I don't even know where the idea came from, even if you look in Dreamtime stories by aboriginals people don't ride kangaroos. Do people still actually believe that? I got asked the other week by an american tourist in Sydney. I was tempted to answer that we did as a joke though, I must admit. Travel Tips i found it the same when i went to the middle east when i came home to Perth I was asked if the Arabs lived in tents and rode camels i said oh yes there camels have 4 wheels and there tents are up to 5 storeys high i find it amusing that in our day and age people still think this Others The first thing i say to someone who lives overseas is that we all ride kangaroos everywhere. Sorry to say that many people are ignorant and will believe anything... a combination of stupid humor and stupid people. On behalf of all Americans I apologize! I promise if I ever get the pleasure to be a tourist in Australia I won't ask stupid questions. (I will want to see the water run down the drain the other way.. that will just trip me out :P) Probably because people like me, tell every tourist we meet that we ride a kangaroo to school and back everyday. =D And a kangaroo seems like such a rideable animal with all the hopping. =D In the States, most people know very little about Australia except what we see in the movies. We know there are kangaroos, koala bears, and The Crocodile Hunter. That's about it. I suspect most people are kidding. The rest are just woefully uninformed. It's just like the rest of the world thinks LA is all "Baywatch" and Beverly Hills. U must be the only one who doesn't tell those ignorant tourists that we do. I also tell them that it legal to marry a koala as long as live in a tree with them. I work for Tourism Australia. |
