Best hotels in Carins Australia for American tourist?

Travel Info
Is it better to stay at a resort in the city of Carins or on a resort on an island on the great barrier reef.

Travel Tips
It all depends on how much you want to pay really - some resorts are pretty pricey here in Cairns.

I would suggest looking at this site http://www.cairnsaccommodation.com.au/de... with SO many accommodation on tap, it鈥檚 hard to choose.
If you stay right in town you can go out on the reef with the Great Adventures: (leaving from the Cairns Esplanade 鈥?Pier - http://www.greatadventures.com.au... Have a day trip seeing the reef and go out on the Outer Reef Activity Platform for lunch. http://www.greatadventures.com.au/defaul...
They go to Green Island first to drop off people (good for a day trip also) cute little Tropical Island with a resort on it. http://www.greenislandresort.com.au...

Other option is staying out at Palm Cove: http://www.cairnsconnect.com/accommodati... - Stunning Resorts !!!!! Then connect with Quicksilver to take you out on the reef.http://www.quicksilver-cruises.com...

You CAN swim in Cairns - More tourists generally travel to Cairns during the winter months, not only for the nice weather, but also because of the stinger-free waters. Instead of four seasons, Cairns has a wet season and dry season. Cairns averages at about 24 掳 to 28 掳 C dry season and in the summer (wet season) Dec 鈥?Feb 30 掳 to 35 掳 C.
From November until May each year, stinger jellyfish make the waters off the coast of Cairns but beaches provide stinger nets for you to swim in (always between the flags) I live here and go to the beach everyday 鈥?you only hear of 1-2 stings are year so don鈥檛 think it is a daily concurrence.

Enjoy your time in Cairns Source(s): I live here
Other Travel Tips
Carins? It is highly over rated, as is the rest of northen queensland

You can't even go swimming up there!

GO to the gold coast or brisbane; muchhhhhhhhhhh better
There's some great answers here, but there are some subjective twists to what one can answer easily.

If you stay on an island, it will be great for snorkelling, diving and a bit of bushwalking - but I'd give that 4 days max before you become bored.

Staying in Cairns is a kinda average to good experience, but it dows allow you to rent a car or take many of the tours in the Daintree, Tablelands , beaches to the North and South of Cairns ie you're more flexible - but there's no reef diving on he beaches as it's too dangerous with stingers [ jellyfish ] and crocs near the estuaries. But a great place to visit.

Here's a directory of all the accommodation you're likely to need. Just click on the section that say's :

"Sort by Name | Type | Location | Price "

Hope this helps you
motels you mean

I would recommend a motel anywhere besides Sheridan St

better still go to the islands and stay at a resort - more relaxing, comfortable, not so busy, friendly people and you can unwind and take your time and enjoy!
