What is different about nursing in Australia opposed to nursing in UK? |
Travel Info Also I was wondering are the medication names all different such as pain killers and antibioutics/ Travel Tips I am a nurse in Australia, and my younger sister is a nurse in the UK. She says that nursing in the UK is a little backward. Nurses there are perceived as hand maidens to the doctors and do not have as much responsibilty. In Oz we do alot of stuff the doctors do in UK like putting in nasogastric tubes (but if you are not comfortable, you can get someone to teach you). In Oz, nurses are seen more as part of a team and doctors respect their knowledge and contribution to the care of the patient. Nurses from the UK are very welcome, as we have such a shortage of nurses and UK nurses fit well into our culture. Most drugs are the same (pronounciation may differ), but every hospital has a great orientation program (especially the public ones) and they make sure that you are upto date with CPR, drug calculations, manual handling etc. (private hospitals may throw you in the deepend - although, hospitals run by Nuns will look after you well like St Vincents or any of the Seventh Day Adventist Hospitals. When in doubt, just ask someone - they are all very helpful. We generally use Morphine, Pethidine, Fentanyl, Ketamine, Alfentanyl, Remifentanil, (I work in OR, so we may have extra narcotics to those on the ward) for Narcotics; BenzylPenicillin, Cefazolin (Kefzol), Cephalothin (Keflin), Cephtriaxone (Rocephin), Vancomycin, Gentamycin, Metrondiazole (Flagyl), Dicloxacillin, Erythromycin for our antibiotics. After working in both private and public hospitals, I would recommend getting a job in public as you get paid more, get a weeks extra holiay (makes 6 weeks per year), have higher penalties for night shift, great superannuation, and they really look after your professional development (you get $3000 per year to go toward studying). Many of the public hospitals have great course like advanced life support etc too, so it is great in furthering your career. The link below is for my state health system (public hospitals are run by individual states - mine is Queensland). Hopefull this helps. Look forward to seeing you in Australia. Source(s): www.health.qld.gov.au Other Travel Tips You need to call all female patients "Sheila" and all male patients "Bruce". There may be many incidences of head wounds caused by wayward boomerangs, and by boxing with kangaroos while wearing hats with dangling corks and drinking Fosters. If you ever have to deal with a knife wound, you will need to brandish a scalpel with the words "call that a knife, mate? THIS is a knife!" Apart from that, you'll find Australians and New Zealanders to be fairly close in physiology to most of the rest of the world. The weather! I knew someone who nurse from the UK who nursed in Oz. They didn't have any problem, but did say there differences, |
