Best places to visit on South Island, New Zealand? |
Travel Info Going to New Zealand end of Jan/early Feb 2008 and want to know the best places to see on the south island - I'll only have a week as the rest of the time I am staying with my friend in Wellington. I don't have a huge budget but I'm not a backpacker either so can stretch to luxuries if it is worth it! Travel Tips Top of the south island - Nelson is a must with the great beaches, vineyards, outdoor adventure and art centres. http://www.nelsonnz.com Abel Tasman National park http://www.abeltasman.co.nz - http://www.aquataxi.co.nz Can walk the track, hire a kayak or walk down one way and aquataxi on the way back. Half way down go down to the beach and swim with the seals ! Marlborough / Picton 鈥?The Sounds - http://www.destinationmarlborough.com... Great wine area.... Whale watching is in Kaikoura. http://www.kaikoura.co.nz http://www.whalewatch.co.nz http://www.whales.co.nz http://www.worldofwhales.co.nz Christchurch Best attractions are http://www.chchattractions.co.nz... The Gondola is great - http://www.gondola.co.nz Christchurch's International Antarctic Centre - http://www.iceberg.co.nz Franz Joseph Glacier - http://www.franzjosefglacier.com... Wanaka 鈥?Lake Wanaka - http://www.lakewanaka.co.nz/index.cfm/ho... Queenstown - adventure capital of NZ. Costly little place with all the attractions on offer. On your budget you just might want to 'take it all in' - plenty to see and do without spending $.. but you can't pass up a bungy jump though. http://www.ajhackett.co.nz and the Milford Sounds, http://www.fiordland.org.nz Enjoy your trip. Source(s): Used to live there. Other Travel Tips WANAKA !!!! its so beautiful. You are in for a great experience! Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, (in the north) - Mount Cook, (further away) - Queenstown, Milford Sound (extreme south). http://www.tripadvisor.com/showforum-g25... Milford Sound, the Southern Scenic Route, Te Anau, Manapouri, Wanaka, Queenstown. But the last 4 are expensive. Buy some groceries at a supermarket somewhere else if you're self-catering. Everywhere except Westport. I would not bother too much with luxuries (except that I would do a flight into Milford Sound). I would concentrate my time in the Southern Ranges (Mt Cook, Wanaka, Queenstown, Te Anau). If you want to see spectacular mountains near the coast, cross the Haast Pass to the West Coast (it will be wet), travel via Fox and Franz Josef for accessible glaciers near sea level and cross back via Arthurs Pass. Kaikoura Cost (north east) is spectacular and has whale watching. Blenheim and the Marlborough Sounds are softer country but still beautiful. Also a major wine growing area. |
