What's to see and do in New Zealand.? |
Travel Info What's the climate like? Any snow? Travel Tips NZ is great - check out, Franz Joseph Glacier in the south island - http://www.franzjosefglacier.com... Yes it snows and alot of it - go to http://www.snow.co.nz for details. Mt Cook In the alpine paradise of Aoraki/Mt Cook you can hike the high trails or simply meditate on the beauty of the Southern Alps. A larger than life experience. http://www.mtcooknz.com for ALL weather in NZ go to the New Zealand Met Service website - http://www.metservice.co.nz/default/inde... Others Much of the South Island always has snow/glaciers. Weatherwise. Its a temperate climate....it never gets as cold as continents...nor as hot.. At the moment we are hovering around 7-17oC, thats the whole country...down south in the winter it does get quite chilly...and inland would probalby be even colder....up north they call it the winterless north as they very rarely get frosts ( thats north of Auckland)....so it varies. In the summer its common to get around 30oC in some places (and max prob of around 36oC.)...but again it varies. I live at the top of the South Island...in my 37 years its only ever snowed twice ( when I was 4 and 8) at sea level here...but if you drive an hour inland you can get snow on the ground at times. I was amazed to see snow in Christchurch when i lived there....it usually does it once a year in the city, and more as you go inland....on the coast (where most towns, cities are) it does not snow a lot....but go inland to the Southern Alps, Kaikouran ranges etc and boy it snows there....hence the skifields all over them!! http://www.newzealand.com/ Hi, Seasons are the opposite of USA/Europe. So July is winter and December is summer. We are in the middle of winter right now. Snow we have now on the lower part of the South Island (snow storm today actually) and on the mountain ranges throughout the country. Winter on North Island is really wet and windy. It hardly ever gets under 10C during the day (it does during the night). I'm in Auckland and we have never had snow, but do get hail occassionally. Summer: North Island is quite humid with temperatures going up to about 30C, the nights are very warm (20C easy). South Island can get really hot (we had over 30C this summer in Alexandra), but usually less humid and not as tropic as top of North Island. The higher you go, the warmer it usually gets. Hope that helps. I live in NZ |
