Can you please give me some idea of daycare centres in New Zealand? |
Travel Info Do they operate from residential areas? Is it expensive? Are there preschools as well? Travel Tips Hi, Preschool is called early childhood centers in NZ. You can find more about them on the Ministry of Educatioon website: www.moe.govt.nz Daycare is simular in that some have both in one. Two big ones: ABC Childhood centre (biggest chain in NZ) and Chipmunks (also suitable for birthday parties). You can find heaps of them in the Yellow Pages: www.yellowpages.co.nz The cost depends on the child care centre. Some have a special philosophy behind them (Steiner, specific religion, designed for disabled kids, etc) which usually makes them more expensive. Also more expensive neighbourhoods tend to have more expensive services. I hope this helps you some what. Others There are day care centres in almost every suburb in new zealand, price all depends on where you are thinking of and if its the price for a full or part day/full or part week. Have a look on the net under kindergartens in NZ or whichever part of NZ you are looking at. They are all pretty good but of course you should always do your homework on a place before you send your child/ren there. I am working at a preschool at the moment (not having anything to do with them 2 months ago) and even in a town the size of Blenheim I am surprised at how many there are, the different types eg having under 2's only, or combined ages, or kindy or playcentres (parent based) etc. They seem to vary a lot in where they are located and some will be in town centres and make use of Mum and Dad going to work in the area, while the other 2 centres in the preschool group that I work in have another in an old residnetial house and the other one is just out of town in a tiny settlement behind a marae...so it really varies. The preschools I am associated with are a non-profit organisation, and I am not sure who "pays" for it, but I tihnk its the council here (as they are non-profit). I assume that others that are more profit based will be more expensive, and a few should be associated with the new 3 and 4 yr olds that have "free" childcare from July (but many preschools are asking for weekly doantations of around $10-20 or even more because the government subsidy is not enough to keep even non-profit preschools break even!! I actually have no idea as to how much they even charge (I am a relief worker there) so sorry about that. The point about childcare places is that they are pretty booked and apparently they like to take full day children, rather than half or part day as its easier to fit in and organise the number of teachers on duty etc....so that may make it easier....I know there is a shortage of teachers too, as they have just opened a new one in the last month and another 2 are (all big ones for here) are opening soon!! oh your poor baby.....daycare+New Zealand....a combination of tragedy |
