Are Australians the descendants of prisoners and convicts???

Travel Info
I've never been to australia before but alot of people have told me that hundreds of years ago, british prisoners who who where thieves, murderers..etc had no more space in cells and so where shipped in their thousands to australia. So he told me, all white australians are descendants of prisoners who were left isolated in the large desert island. Please don't take offence, this is just what i heard and not what i said.

Travel Tips
When the last shipment of convicts disembarked in Western Australia in 1868, the total number of transported convicts stood at around 162,000 men and women. They were transported here on 806 ships.

The transportation of convicts to Australia ended at a time when the colonies' population stood at around one million, compared to 30,000 in 1821. By the mid-1800s there were enough people here to take on the work, and enough people who needed the work. The colonies could therefore sustain themselves and continue to grow. The convicts had served their purpose.
While the vast majority of the convicts to Australia were English (70%), Irish (24%) or Scottish (5%), the convict population had a multicultural flavour. Some convicts had been sent from various British outposts such as India and Canada. There were also Maoris from New Zealand, Chinese from Hong Kong and slaves from the Caribbean.

A large number of soldiers were transported for crimes such as mutiny, desertion and insubordination. Australia's first bushranger - John Caesar - sentenced at Maidstone, Kent in 1785 was born in the West Indies.
Others
Its true..........some ended up in New Zealand also, but many others were sent here to escape the poor house in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. etc.
Not many. Yes it's true that Australia was a british convict colony, but there were so many non-convicts that have came over since from all over the world that the percentage of convicts is really small.
wow I never read that far into the history of Australia at all. It will be something I will be looking more into that is for sure.
Australia was used as a convict settlement by the British Empire in the late 1700s and onwards. Some of these people were hardened criminals but others were sentenced to penal servitude for stealing food. Australia is a very multicultural society and has had migrants from around world since it was first discovered. Some of us Aussies ( or our parents) are fairly recent migrants to Australia. We have people from all cultures living in reasonable harmony. I myself don't have any British blood, my ancestors are from Poland and I'm sure that there are quite a few skeletons in my family history as there probably are in yours.
No wonder some can be so savage-like sometimes, but they tend to follow Asians a lot too. So got married to Asians.
I met an Australian with his Asian wife in KL and he has wonderful ways of relating life in Perth, compared to cities like Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne.
As an overall, Australia is graded not bad, although New Zealand fairs better in manners and reputation.
