What is the cost of living in Brisbane?

Travel Info
I am looking into moving my family of five from Texas to Brisbane in the next year or so. I would like to know how much homes cost, the cost of Petrol, cost/taxes on cars, cost of education, and any other information that a Native Aussie would love to share.

Travel Tips
Average home prices vary considerably with the suburb but around $400,000 to $500,000 will get you a decent home not too far out from the centre of town. Have a look at houses for sale in Brisbane on www.realestate.com.au - to check the suburbs, use the free suburb report link on the main page, or check out www. whereis.com.au to see where it is. Of course, it depends on whether you want to live near the city - many people have little need to go to the centre of town so they live further out where it's cheaper - many large shopping centres are spread amongst the suburbs (look at www.westfield.com.au which owns many of them).

Currently petrol is varying between about $1.20 to $1.30 per litre (all prices given are $AU of course).

Have a look at the average price of cars on www.carpoint.com.au.

Not sure about education - a few years ago, private high school cost around $3000 to $5000 per year - a few schools are obviously higher and some lower. Of course, you can send them to "free" state high schools (the "free" bit is because they're supposed to be free but some have been in the news lately because they are forcing students to pay extra levies to do certain subjects).

To have a look at a few other things about our great Brisvegas (a joke name locals call it because it is absolutely nothing like Vegas), look at www. ourbrisbane.com

Hi,

I lived in Brisbane for a few years and the cost of living will be different based on your life style. For that reason I recommend you to check the prices of main items and services and make some calculations.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics presents every trimester information on this items. You can download the file from this link http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/...

I hope this helps. If you want to get more information on Brisbane you can visit also this site http://www.studymove.com
